Name/Nicknames: Dexter, Dex My Story: Dex was found in a home with 2 other dogs a couple days after his owner had passed away. All three dogs were taken to the animal control facility before being vetted and fostered by Pet Haven. Dex had a really hard first couple weeks; he was very anxious and distrusting of all new people. However, he did great with the two resident dogs, including a hyperactive lab and cranky old Australian Shepherd. Now that he has had some time to settle in, Dex is warming up and becoming the loving, warm soul that we knew was there all along! Dex has shown signs of arthritis but is currently being treated with over-the-counter pain medication which works well for him. In years to come, he may require an inexpensive prescription medication, Rimadyl, to treat his arthirits as/if the pain becomes worse as he ages. Hobbies: Dex LOVES being pet by the humans in his house. if he can lay on the nice, cool floor and be pet all day long he will be one happy camper! He does also enjoy going for walks; right now he goes for a walk every other day for about a half a mile. He does not have any interest in toys. Commands/Tricks: Sit, Lay Down, Come Crate / Potty Trained:Yes to both! In the evenings he lays on the floor of his foster mom's bedroom, and during the day he is kenneled (8 hours) but he has also done fine with run of the house the few chances he has been left out on his own. Activity Level: Low- Dex is a laid back fellow Fun things I do: Dex's favorite treat is a good pig ear. Socialization/who I currently live with: Dex lives with an adult female and her adult male roommate, along with a 7 year old Australian Shepherd and he has lived with a 1 year old HYPER lab foster sister and now a 10 pound pekegnese mix foster brother. He has done great with all of them! In his previous home he lived with an adult male and the male's other two dogs; a two year old standard poodle and a five year old miniature poodle. My Ideal Family: Dex has only three requirements: (1) No small kids (he has been around them and did not show any signs of aggression, but gets nervous with their rapid movements and seeing eye-level with them), (2) Minimal/no stairs (his arthiritis makes it difficult for Dex to climb stairs and due to his large size it would be very hard for his new family to carry him up/downstairs as he continues to age and stairs become more of a challenge), (3) patient owners (Dex takes a while to warm up to the new people in the household).
Dex is attending Pet Haven's medium/large dog adoption events and his adoption fee is $200 (cash or check only) and includes spay/neuter, heartworm check, current vaccinations, and microchip and registration. Due to post-adoption services provided, it is Pet Haven's policy to only place dogs into homes within a 60-mile radius of the Twin Cities area.
