Sports Backers Stadium was the site Friday for the track competition at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Even with temperatures reaching more than 100, athletes were not deterred.

Track competition is broken into classes based upon disability; however, multiple classes are run simultaneously. The individual times are then recorded and medals are handed out to each class' top three finishers. Final results won't be available until tonight's medal ceremony.

The first two races of the afternoon session had to be canceled because of the heat, but fans still saw plenty of intense racing. In particular, they saw Orlando Perez win heat races in the 400-, 200- and 100-meter events.

"Never doubt a veteran," said North Carolinian Lloyd Kelso, who served with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. "It doesn't matter where we go ??. we just do the best we can for our country and lay it all on the line."

Heat and 2011 heart attack notwithstanding, Kelso held nothing back in his 100- and 200-meter races. He finished second in both and is a medal hopeful.

"In the 200, they took off like rabbits on me and I said, 'Uh-huh, this isn't going to work.' And so I told myself, 'Let's go, let's go, let's go.'?"

In the 100, Kelso said, "We all took off about the same and then the guy that was in Lane 3, I think ?? he was on me, and I just told myself, 'He's got to go, get rid of him.' So I kicked it then."

The 400-meter races got the competition started. Perez, who returned to the games after a successful effort last year, finished first in his heat with a time of 1:11:53.

In the second 400-meter event, William Fry crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:14:86.

There were three heats in the 200 meters. Winners were Thomas Strang (1:12:31), Perez (35:43) and Bradford Carlson (50:29).

The day finished with four 100-meter heats. Chatriex Goodson (34:79), Perez (19.13), Sam Hudson (23:75) and Carlson (23:75) finished first in their heats.

"I thought it went well," said event co-chairman Ted Baker. "The biggest obstacle was the heat, but we made a few changes and were still able to get through almost all of the events. ??. I thought it was a success overall. We've been working hard on it for over a year now, so it's nice to see all of it come together and see athletes coming in from all over the country to compete."

News organizations don't all get ruling right

NEW YORK (AP) ? A rush to quickly report the Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's health care law on Thursday tripped up some news organizations that got it wrong and had to quickly correct themselves.

Both CNN and Fox News Channel initially reported incorrectly that the law's central provision, requiring virtually all Americans to have health insurance, had been struck down. In an apology, CNN said it "regrets that it didn't wait to report out the full and complete opinion regarding the mandate."

The Associated Press got it right, as did other news organizations and broadcast television outlets, generally. A minute after the AP flash alert at 10:07 a.m., The New York Times asked its readers for time, with Washington bureau chief David Leonhardt posting that reporters and editors were analyzing the decision.

"Once we are comfortable with its basic meaning, you can expect a torrent of coverage," he said. The Times next sent news via Twitter at 10:20.

It was a particularly embarrassing muff for CNN, which has suffered through one of its worst ratings quarters in several years, primarily due to a paucity of big news. The network eagerly awaited the Supreme Court's decision Thursday, running a "countdown clock" on its screen during the morning ticking down to 10 a.m.

Anchor Wolf Blitzer and reporter Kate Bolduan quickly reported that the health care law was struck down, based on a reading of Chief Justice John Roberts' decision that the mandate was not a valid exercise of congressional power under the commerce clause. Later in the reading, the justices found other reasons for upholding that portion of the law.

CNN's screen read: "Supreme Ct. Kills Individual Mandate."

"The court striking down that mandate is a dramatic blow to the president," said John King, CNN reporter.

The network also sent an email reporting that the mandate had been struck down and posted the news on Twitter.

By 10:13 a.m., some doubt had seeped in and the onscreen headline read: "Supreme Court Rules on Obama Law."

"Let's take a deep breath and see what the justices actually decided," Blitzer said. "It could be more complicated than we originally thought."

By 10:15, the network was reporting that the entire law had been upheld, and King called it "a huge, huge victory for President Obama."

Fox made the same initial mistake, with Bill Hemmer touting the "breaking news" that the individual mandate had been declared unconstitutional. Fox anchor Bret Baier tweeted the same news. Within two minutes, however, Megyn Kelly was citing the SCOTUSblog in casting doubt on that interpretation, even ordering producers to change an onscreen headline that read: "Supreme Court Finds Health Care Individual Mandate Unconstitutional."

"We're trying to do the best we can," Hemmer said.

Michael Clemente, Fox executive vice president of news and editorial, was unapologetic. "We gave our viewers the news as it happened ... Fox reported the facts, as they came in."

Several members of Congress tweeted incorrect information about the ruling, perhaps based on the initial misreading by cable networks.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California called it a "big win for liberty and the Constitution. Rep. Tom Rooney (R, Fla.) said it was "great news for the American people, victory for constitution."

On CBS, Jan Crawford spoke on the air as she scanned the decision. "It appears, based on our quick summary, that the mandate, the individual mandate at the heart of this case may be in jeopardy under one provision of the constitution but they may have upheld the mandate under another provision."

ABC initially bobbled one detail ? calling the ruling 6-3 instead of 5-4 ? but correctly reported the outcome in a special report by Terry Moran. NBC's Pete Williams said that "the bottom line here is the Supreme Court has upheld the health care law."

Montford Point Marines honored at Marine Barracks Washington

WASHINGTON ? Approximately 400 Montford Point Marines received their bronze replica Congressional Gold Medals at a special ceremony held at Marine Barracks Washington June 28.

The Montford Point Marines were presented the official gold medal, as an organization, during a ceremony held on the United States Capitol grounds a day earlier.

The Congressional Gold Medal is awarded by Congress and is the highest civilian award in the nation. The award comes more than seven decades after the Montford Point Marines broke the militarie's last color barrier.

?After taking a trip with SgtMaj. Kent, who was the 16th sergeant major of the Marine Corps, to a Montford Point Marine reunion at Camp Pendleton?s base theatre,? said Gen. James F. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps. ?I walked out that day, not knowing the history of Montford Point Marines. I looked at SgtMaj. Kent and said, ?We?ve got to do something about this.? We are not done today; there are a host of things happening in the Marine Corps to anchor what (Montford Point Marines) have done for our Corps.?

In 1942, President Roosevelt established a presidential directive giving African-Americans an opportunity to be recruited into the Marine Corps. But the African-Americans who were recruited at that time would not train alongside their white counterparts.

Instead a separate camp was established at Montford Point in North Carolina. The nearly 20,000 African-American Marines who trained there from its opening in 1942 to its closure in 1949 were not welcomed by the Corps. The African-American Marines of that era were met with open prejudice, segregation and mistreatment.

Today?s ceremony was another step by the Corps to help recognize the numerous contributions made by the Montford Point Marines and ensure their legacy is not forgotten.

?There are not words in my vocabulary or anyone else, to tell you the joys I feel with this medal,? said Stanley Porter, 1942 Montford Point graduate. ?This day is marvelous, just marvelous.?

For years scientists have slaved away, trying to piece together the genes that make up the ripe, red goodness that is the tomato. They have finally published the fleshy fruit's genome in full.

The genome of any species is the DNA code that is stored as a blueprint inside every cell of every individual of that species. The DNA letters, called base pairs, are organized into genes, which are translated into proteins, the building blocks and machinery of every cell.

Decoding these genes can help researchers understand the different types of proteins found in organisms, and how these proteins make that species different from every other species. These kinds of insights from the genome could help crop researchers improve the yield, nutritional content, disease resistance, taste and color of tomatoes, they say.

"For any characteristic of the tomato, whether it's taste, natural pest resistance or nutritional content, we've captured virtually all those genes," study researcher James Giovannoni, of Cornell University, said in a statement. "Tomato genetics underlies the potential for improved taste every home gardener knows and every supermarket shopper desires and the genome sequence will help solve this and many other issues in tomato production and quality."

Generic and wild genomes

The researchers sequenced the genome of the tomato species Solanum lycopersicum, of the variety "Heinz 1706," as their type tomato. These tomatoes possess some 35,000 genes arranged on 12 chromosomes (large arrangements of hundreds of genes packed into one strand), the researchers said.

The researchers also sequenced the garden tomato's wild ancestor, Solanum Pimpinellifolium.

Knowing the sequence of one tomato can help seed companies and plant breeders get a grasp on what makes different varieties, like heirloom tomatoes, different from the generic grocery tomato.

Because the variability between two varieties is pretty small, it's easier to use the Heinz 1706 genome as a guide, and pinpoint the differences that lead to changes in color, taste, texture, size and shapethat distinguish one variety from another.

Tomato vs. potato

The genome is also important in learning why the tomato is so different from its genetic relatives in the nightshade family of flowering plants, which includes the potato, pepper and even coffee. Scientists want to know what genes have changed that gives each of these species their distinct flavor and look.

"Now we can start asking a lot more interesting questions about fruit biology, disease resistance, root development and nutritional qualities," Giovannoni said.

Tomatoes represent a $2 billion market in the United States alone. The USDA estimates that Americans consume, on average, more than 72 pounds (33 kilograms) of tomato products annually. Researchers have even developed a robot tomato harvester to go into space (or just use here on Earth).

The study will be published tomorrow (May 31) in the journal Nature.

Out of Coffee Meets Bagel?s 44,000 matches, people with mutual friends are 37.2% more likely to both give each other the thumbs up. Women are much more influenced by the mutual friends effect. And there?s even a magic number of acquaintances in common that makes you 90% more likely to want to get frisky?

Turns out four is the ideal number of mutual friends, almost doubling the chances two people will dig each other. Suspected gas blast destroys homes, kills child

An explosion in England left at least one child dead after five terraced houses were destroyed in a suspected gas blast.

Firefighters continue searching through the rubble in Manchester for anyone who might be trapped. One man was taken to the hospital with severe burns, BBC reported.

"It's like a war zone - tiles that have blown off literally across the streets, there's just debris everywhere. It's mad," Alex Perkins, who lives nearby, told BBC. "It's just empty, there's nothing there, just bricks on the floor, just rubble."

Georgian Ulla, who also lives on the street, told the BBC her house "shook like it was an earthquake."

"All the lights shook - I thought someone was breaking in to begin with," she added. "First thing that I saw was all the toys on the floor. Apparently there are kids that live in the house."

The explosion was felt half a mile away, and shock waves broke windows, set off car alarms and littered the area with fragments of roof slates. At least 100 homes were evacuated, and 30 firefighters were on the scene.

Craig Needham, who runs a nearby garage, told the BBC that he and his employees ran outside when they heard the blast.

"We could just see a black plume. We thought a bomb had dropped," he said.

Transgenic technique 'eliminates' a specific neural circuit in brain of primates

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? In the brains of humans and non-human primates, over 100 billion nerve cells build up complicated neural circuits and produce higher brain functions. When an attempt is made to perform gene therapy for neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease, it is necessary to specify a responsible neural circuit out of many complicated circuits.?Until now, however, it was difficult to introduce a target gene into this particular circuit selectively.

The collaborative research group consisting of Professor Masahiko Takada from Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, Professor Atsushi Nambu from National Institute for Physiological Sciences, National Institutes of Natural Sciences, and Professor Kazuto KOBAYASHI from Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine have now developed a gene transfer technique that can "eliminate"a specific neural circuit in non-human primates for the first time.

They applied this technique to the basal ganglia, the brain region that is affected in movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and successfully eliminated a particular circuit selectively to elucidate its functional role. This technique can be applied to gene therapy for various neurological diseases in humans. This research achievement was supported by the Strategic Research Program of Brain Sciences by MEXT of Japan.

The research group developed a special viral vector, NeuRet-IL-2R alpha-GFP viral vector, expressing human interleukin type 2 alpha receptor, which the cell death inducer immunotoxin binds. Nerve cells transfected with this viral vector cause cell death by immunotoxin. First, the research group injected the viral vector into the subthalamic nucleus that is a component of the basal ganglia. Then, they injected immunotoxin into the motor cortex, an area of the cerebral cortex that controls movement, and succeed in selective elimination of the "hyperdirect pathway" that is one of the major circuits connecting the motor cortex to the basal ganglia. As a result, they have discovered that neuronal excitation observed at the early stage occurs through this hyperdirect pathway when motor information derived from the cortex enters the basal ganglia.

Professors Takada and Nambu expect that this gene transfer technique enables us to elucidate higher brain functions in primates and to develop primate models of various psychiatric/neurological disorders and their potential treatments including gene therapy. They think that this should provide novel advances in the field of neuroscience research that originate from Japan.

T-Mobile USA to buy, swap spectrum with Verizon

NEW YORK (AP) ? T-Mobile USA says it has agreed to buy wireless spectrum rights from Verizon Wireless and swap other spectrum holdings with the company, bolstering the ability of both to offer faster wireless data services.

Verizon doesn't yet own all of the spectrum that it wants to transfer to T-Mobile. It has agreed to buy spectrum rights from a consortium of cable companies, but that deal is facing tough scrutiny from regulators in Washington.

The T-Mobile-Verizon deal is contingent on the Verizon-cable deal going through, and gives added reason for regulators to approve it. T-Mobile is the fourth-largest cellphone carrier in the country, and is starved for spectrum compared to its larger competitors.

Neither T-Mobile nor Verizon said what T-Mobile would pay Verizon for the spectrum.

Preventative maintenance isn?t a ?cool? topic, but in today?s economic climate it?s more important than ever to keep your car in top running shape so that it will last as long as possible ? without costly repairs. By performing a few minutes of maintenance once a month, you can help ensure that your car will be running for a long, long time.

?

With just a little practice, the following tasks can be done in less than 15 minutes. It might take a little longer the first few times you run through the steps, but a few minutes now prevents lengthy waits in repair shops, so it?s worth it. Just follow this list:

• Check the air filter?- If you can?t see any light through the sides, drop it lightly on a hard surface and look again. If you still can?t see light, it?s time for a new filter. Regardless, your air filter should be replaced once a year or each 20,000 miles.
• Check the belts?- If any of the belts has more than 1/2? of give when you push it, you might be able to adjust it if the belt is in good shape. If any belt is cracked, frayed, or shiny on the inside it should be replaced regardless.
• Check the battery?- If the battery has caps or bars on top, carefully pry them off and check the water level. If low, fill to the top of the metal plates with distilled water. If there are powdery deposits on either of the terminals, they?ll also need cleaning. You can clean the worst of these deposits with a small amount of Coca-cola followed by a small amount of clean water for a rinse. Dry the terminals completely then coat with a small amount of petroleum jelly to keep the corrosion from coming back.
• Check the radiator ? Most modern cars have a coolant overflow tank, so there?s usually no reason to open the radiator. Check to make sure the fluid is at the ?full? line. If not, add a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Most modern engine blocks are aluminum and require the protection of coolant, so only add straight water in an emergency. Straight coolant is overkill. Never open a pressure cap while the engine is hot!
• Check the hoses ? walk around the front of the engine compartment and feel/look at each hose. Any that are cracked, bulging, or excessively soft should be replaced. It?s cheap and easy to replace a hose before it bursts. If you lose on on the highway the tow charge alone could be 6x the cost or more.
• Check the oil dipstick ? pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean lint-free rag (or paper towel). Put the dipstick back in the engine and check it again. The oil level should be between the ?add? and ?full? lines. If the oil is dirty or smells like gasoline, it?s time to change it.
• Check the transmission fluid ? the transmission dipstick is nearly the same as the oil dipstick, but it?s usually a little harder to spot. It?s checked in the same manner, but if you have to add transmission fluid, it?s added via the dipstick tube. After you check the level, rub a little of the oil between your fingers. It should be pinkish and clean. If not, you?ll need to have your mechanic replace the transmission fluid. This job is far less costly than a new transmission.
• Check brake fluid ? If your car has ABS, refer to the owner?s manual before checking this fluid level. Otherwise, open the top of the brake fluid reservoir and check that the level is between the low and high level marks. Be careful to not get brake fluid on anything painted- it eats paint. Also, brake fluid can be ruined if it?s left exposed to air in as little as 15 minutes, so be sure to keep the bottle closed tightly. If the brake fluid looks dirty, have your mechanic replace it. On average, brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years.
• Check the power steering fluid ? again, make sure the fluid level is up to the fill mark.
• Check the wiring ? if any wires look frayed or if there is lots of corrosion on them, they?ll need to be replaced by your mechanic. Again, this job is far less expensive if you replace them before they fail.
• Check the washer fluid ? while not as critical as the other fluids, it?s worth taking the time to check and fill your washer fluid while under the hood. If you?re in a cold area, it?s important to use a solution that contains antifreeze.
• Check wiper blades ? Obviously you?ll know when your blades are getting old when they start skipping or streaking during a rain storm. Replace them as soon as you notice a problem.
• Check tires ? Check the air pressure in your tires. Properly inflated tires will help improve your gas mileage and will help with even tire wear. If your tires are worn, get them replaced for both safety and to prevent a costly road call.

Fifteen minutes of effort once per month can prevent hours of towing and repair shop waiting as well as the costs associated with them. These maintenance items can also help your car las as long as possible.

Islamist Morsy wins Egyptian presidency with 52 percent

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood was declared Egypt's first democratic president on Sunday by the state election committee, which said he had defeated former general Ahmed Shafik with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote.

He succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown 16 months ago after a popular uprising. The military council which has ruled the biggest Arab nation since then has this month curbed the powers of the presidency, meaning the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters burst into cheers on Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving national flags, setting off fireworks and chanting "Allahu Akbar!" or God is Great, greeting a dramatic victory, tempered by the army's continuing role.

"Say! Don't fear! The military must go!" crowds chanted.

For Morsy, a U.S.-educated engineer who spent time in jail under Mubarak, a spokesman said: "This is a testament to the resolve of the Egyptian people to make their voice heard."

Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, offered no immediate reaction. He has said he would offer to serve in a Morsy administration.

Morsy, 60, won the first round ballot in May with a little under a quarter of the vote. He has pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority, who are anxious over religious rule.

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States. Morsy has said he will respect international treaties, notably that signed with Israel in 1979, on which much U.S. aid depends.

"President Morsy will struggle to control the levers of state," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo.

"He will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions. Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him to fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around," Zarwan told Reuters. "This would be a mistake.

"His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

LIMITED POWERS

Morsy will not enjoy the extent of modern, pharaonic powers exercised by Mubarak: those have been curtailed by a military establishment which will decide just how much he will be able to do in government. The Brotherhood had said it would press on with protests against the army's latest rulings.

Still, his victory in the country's first free presidential election breaks a tradition of domination by men from the armed forces, which have provided every Egyptian leader since the overthrow of the monarchy 60 years ago, and installs in office a group that drew on 84 years of disciplined grassroots activism to catapult Morsy into the presidency.

He has promised a moderate, modern Islamist agenda to steer Egypt into a new democratic era where autocracy will be replaced by transparent government that respects human rights and revives the fortunes of a powerful Arab state long in decline. Morsy is promising an "Egyptian renaissance with an Islamic foundation".

Yet the stocky, bespectacled party official, appears something of an accidental president: he was only flung into the race at the last moment by the disqualification on a technicality of Khairat al-Shater, the group's preferred choice.

With a stiff and formal style, Morsy, who has a doctorate from the University of Southern California, cast himself as a reluctant latecomer to the race, who cited religious fear of judgment day as one of his reasons for running. He struggled to shake off his label as the Brotherhood's "spare tire".

Questions remain over the extent to which Morsy will operate independently of other Brotherhood leaders once in office: his manifesto was drawn up by the group's policymakers. The role Shater might play has been one focus of debate in Egypt.

"I will treat everyone equally and be a servant of the Egyptian people," Morsy said at his campaign headquarters in Cairo shortly after polling ended last Sunday, a week before his victory was confirmed by the Mubarak-era judicial body overseeing the vote.

But many Egyptians, not least the Christian minority, remain suspicious of Morsy and even more so of the group he represents. Anti-Brotherhood sentiment, fuelled by both a hostile media and some of the group's policies, has soared in recent weeks.

Community Theatre hosting celebrity roast featuring Parish President

Iberville Community Theatre, a division of We Are The Difference, Inc, is planning its first annual Celebrity Roast. Iberville Parish President, J. Mitchell Ourso, Jr. will be the guest celebrity. Friends, co-workers and family members will thrill us with stories from President Ourso?s past.

The evening includes dinner (Chicken Fettucine, Salad, Corn, Bread and Dessert). There will be a cash bar available. The event takes place on June 21 at the Carl F. Grant Civic Center.
