PPC Search Engine Marketing: Can You Afford to Invest?

The idea of purchasing traffic for a website seems a bit risky, especially if you don't have a lot of money to invest in your online business when it first gets started. Yet, investing in pay-per-click (PPC) search engine marketing is the fastest way to draw targeted traffic to your website.

How do you determine whether you can afford to pay for traffic through PPC right now or not? Following are some quick questions that can help you determine whether you are in the right place to pay for exposure and traffic or if you need to stick with organic SEO and other free marketing strategies for the time being.

#1: Is your business or website just getting its start?

Most people do not have the money to invest in PPC search engine marketing when they are just getting started. Most people start online businesses because they don't require all the start-up capital that is required to start a business offline, so it only makes sense that most don't have money to invest in paid marketing strategies.

If you do have some money that can be invested in getting fast targeted traffic to your site, make sure you choose your keywords properly and set up a budget before you get started. It is very easy to blow a budget through small mistakes if you don't know what you are doing with PPC.

#2: How competitive are your keywords?

The more competitive your keywords are, the more you will have to put down per bid to get your PPC campaign going. As more people jump into the market for a specific keyword the prices start to go up as a reflection of that demand. This is because the search engines have to rotate all of these ads and determine who gets the most exposure and the best spots.

If you have low competition keywords to target, then a small PPC campaign may pay off for you. If all your keywords are super competitive then you really have to question whether you can afford to launch the campaign and be successful.

How far is your budget going to stretch with different keywords?

#3: Is your website or blog ready to keep the traffic you pull in from PPC?

Paying for search engine ad clicks is only effective if you have a great website or blog to greet your visitors. If they show up to a page telling them you are under construction or a site that is not easy to navigate, they are going to quickly click away to another site.

Make sure the information on your website is closely related to the keywords you are targeting with your PPC ads. Make sure visitors can find what they need once they get to your site. Finally, make sure the content of your site is accurate, entertaining, and original. This is what makes visitors want to stick around and come back another day.

#4: What other search engine marketing strategies will you be using?

It isn't smart to rely entirely on PPC search engine marketing. You should be working on your organic SEO and other creative marketing strategies while you invest in the paid search engine ads.

Paying for traffic through the search engines is not for everyone and not everyone needs it. Make sure you need it and can afford it before you jump into the game.
