Radioactive tuna travels from Japan to US faster than wind

Low levels of nuclear radiation from the Fukushima power plant have turned up in 15 bluefin tuna caught off San Diego. The fish is not harmful to humans, say researchers.

Low levels of nuclear radiation from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima power plant have turned up in bluefin tuna off the California coast, suggesting that these fish carried radioactive compounds across the Pacific Ocean faster than wind or water can.

Small amounts of cesium-137 and cesium-134 were detected in 15 tuna caught near San Diego in August 2011, about four months after these chemicals were released into the water off Japan's east coast, scientists reported on Monday.

That is months earlier than wind and water currents brought debris from the plant to waters off Alaska and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

The amount of radioactive cesium in the fish is not thought to be damaging to people if consumed, the researchers said in a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Without making a definitive judgment on the safety of the fish, lead author Daniel Madigan of Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station noted that the amount of radioactive material detected was far less than the Japanese safety limit.

"I wouldn't tell anyone what's safe to eat or what's not safe to eat," Madigan said in a telephone interview. "It's become clear that some people feel that any amount of radioactivity, in their minds, is bad and they'd like to avoid it. But compared to what's there naturally ... and what's established as safety limits, it's not a large amount at all."

He said the scientists found elevated levels of two radioactive isotopes of the element cesium: cesium 137, which was present in the eastern Pacific before the

Fukushima Daiichi disaster in the spring of 2011; and cesium 134, which is produced only by human activities and was not present before the earthquake and tsunami hit the Japanese plant.

Because cesium 134 is generated only by human activities - nuclear power plants and weapons - and there was none in the Pacific for several years before the Fukushima accident, they reckoned that any cesium 134 they found in tuna off California had to come from Fukushima.

SWIMMING THROUGH CESIUM
There was about five times the background amount of cesium 137 in the bluefin tuna they tested, but that is still a tiny quantity, Madigan said: 5 becquerels instead of 1 becquerel. (It takes 37 billion becquerels to equal 1 curie; for context, a pound of uranium-238 has 0.00015 curies of radioactivity, so one becquerel would be a truly miniscule proportion.)

The researchers figured that the elevated levels of cesium 137 and all of the cesium 134 they detected came from Fukushima because of the way bluefin tuna migrate across the Pacific.

Bluefin tuna spawn only in the western Pacific, off the coasts of Japan and the Philippines. As young fish, some migrate east to the California coast, where upwelling ocean water brings lots of food for them and their prey. They get to these waters as juveniles or adolescents, and remain there, fattening up.

Judging by the size of the bluefin tuna they sampled - they averaged about 15 pounds (6 kg) - the researchers knew these were young fish that had left Japanese water about a month after the accident.

Most of the radiation was released over a few days in April 2011, and unlike some other compounds, radioactive cesium does not quickly sink to the sea bottom but remains dispersed in the water column, from the surface to the ocean floor.

Fish can swim right through it, ingesting it through their gills, by taking in seawater or by eating organisms that have already taken it in, Madigan said.

Bluefin tuna typically have low levels of naturally occurring radioactive material, such as potassium 40, which was present in the world's oceans long before human beings walked the Earth.

Compared to these natural levels of radioactivity, the amount contributed by Fukushima raised the level about 3 percent, Madigan said.
He said there were probably much higher levels of cesium 134 present in bluefin tuna off Japan soon after the accident, as much as 40 to 50 percent higherthan normal. Cesium 134 decays quickly, with a half-life of two years. Bluefin tuna excrete it on a daily basis and it also gets diluted in their bodies as they grow.

America Ferrera Lends Name, Support To Latino Voter Mobilization Effort

In 1994, America Ferrera was 9-years-old and living with her family in Los Angles when her mother took her aside for a conversation adults who are not Latino may find shocking.

A wave of anti-immigrant sentiment and complaints about draining public resources aimed at the state?s then-growing undocumented immigrant population had inspired a ballot initiative and new law, Proposition 187. The measure -? passed by a wide margin of California voters but later deemed unconstitutional by a federal court ?- sought to create a state-run citizenship screening program.

?My mother said, ?Listen, someone may ask you what you are and where you are from. Don?t let anyone scare you. You are an American',? Ferrera told a group of mostly Latino elected officials, activists, students and reporters gathered at an event to unveil America4America.com, a website she is committed to that highlights voter mobilization, labor and other groups to energize the Latino electorate.

The irony in a childhood tale about a young Ferrera being coached to handle questions about her citizenship set off a short wave of laughter at Thursday?s event. Ferrera's parents immigrated to the United States from Honduras in the 1970s, nearly a decade before Ferrera was born. But almost 20 years after Ferrera?s conversation with her mother in California, state-level immigration enforcement nationwide have not only continued but become more common.

Those policies and the conversations they inspire in Latino homes are among the chief reasons Hispanic voters need to harness their growing voting power for the November election, said Maria Teresa Kumar, co-founder and president of Voto Latino, a nonpartisan political engagement organization.

Much has been made of the surging size of the nation?s Latino population. Census data indicates that about 50,000 Latinos will turn 18 each month this year, making some of them eligible to vote. But, Latinos also have the lowest voter registration rates of any demographic group in the United States, said Congressman Charles Gonzalez, a Democrat from Texas, who also chairs the Hispanic Congressional Caucus.

Among those who are legally eligible to vote, 78 percent of not Hispanic, white Americans and nearly 60 percent of black Americans are registered, Gonzalez said. But only 48 percent of eligible Latino voters are listed on voting rolls somewhere in the United States.

Thursday?s event -? like many others in Washington -? was heavy on ceremony, but light on substance and details about what organizations will do differently this year to reach the nation?s eligible Latino voters.

Every elected official in the room took advantage of an allotted two-minute speech time, and when the event ended, more than two dozen people angled to have their photo taken with Ferrera or elected officials.

America4America.com will include information, data and other tools that aim to mobilize Latino voters. It is also one part of an effort uniting Voto Latino; the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan voter engagement organization; the union-affiliated Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and others that plan to put organizers on the ground, register eligible voters and get those already on the rolls to the polls in November, Kumar said.

But for Kumar, the difference this year is clear. America4America.com and those grassroots activists will, ?keep it real and make it personal,? Kumar said.

?We?re going to go there because politicians have made it personal, ? said Kumar. ?When they use anti-immigrant rhetoric to stoke anxiety and gain votes, when they propose policies that frankly consist of nothing more than racial profiling, they?ve made it personal. Because when they are talking about immigrants we understand, that they are talking about us. They are talking about our families.?

That's a message that may resonate, said Matt Barreto, a political scientist at the University of Washington and a co-founder of Latino Decisions, a polling and research firm. About 80 percent of Latinos living in the United States are either immigrants, the children or grandchildren of immigrants, according to a 2011 Latino Decision's poll.

So while Latino voters may have a range of political concerns, the immigrant experience is immediate, real, well-understood and something around which there is a deep well of sensitivity and concern, said Barreto.

Dragon splashdown marks end of landmark flight

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? SpaceX completed a landmark mission May 31 that saw its Dragon capsule deliver half-a-ton of supplies and equipment to the International Space Station and return safely to Earth.

The flight made history as the first privately built spacecraft to rendezvous with the International Space Station. Its true impact is expected to be seen in coming months as the company sends regular re-supply missions to the orbiting outpost and continues work to launch astronauts into orbit in a few years.

"We are hoping to continue working with NASA and hopefully flying crew within three years," said Elon Musk, the founder, CEO and chief designer for the Hawthorne, Calif.-based Space Exploration Technologies, better known as SpaceX. "This was a crucial step and makes the chances of becoming a multi planet species more likely."

NASA engineers worked closely with SpaceX throughout preparations for the uncrewed demonstration mission.

"As a country, we should be very proud," said Mike Suffredini, NASA International Space Station program manager. We took a capability that this agency has nurtured over many years, combined that with a different thought process in spacecraft design and created a team that worked very well. The SpaceX team learned a lot and so did our NASA engineers."

The SpaceX mission combined the goals of two separate flights under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Program, known as COTS. Originally slated to fly by the station and then come back to Earth, SpaceX and the NASA agreed to let the Dragon connect to the laboratory as long as a string of performance tests were successful.

SpaceX launched the Dragon capsule on top of the company's Falcon 9 rocket at 3:44 a.m. EDT on May 22 to begin the chase of the space station. Working with an instantaneous launch window, the SpaceX launch team executed a flawless countdown that culminated with the Falcon lifting off from Space launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The Dragon began accomplishing a long list of operational "firsts" soon after reaching space, including the first use of the trunk, a small module attached to the bottom of the capsule. The trunk holds a pair of solar arrays that generate electricity for the Dragon capsule. On operational missions, the trunk can be loaded with cargo that can be exposed to the vacuum of space.

Doors on the Dragon opened as-planned to reveal the navigation instruments and other hardware the spacecraft would need to pick out the International Space Station in the void of space and then fly to it.

The first approach came on day three of the mission, when Dragon steered itself around the station remaining 1.5 miles clear. Numerous tests were run on the spacecraft and its communications with the crew on the station.

Astronaut Don Pettit guided the historic link-up the next day, Friday, May 25, when he reached the station's 32-foot-long robotic arm, Canadarm 2, out to the Dragon as it hovered near the station.

"Looks like we caught a Dragon by the tail," the astronaut radioed from the station to ground controllers in Houston and at SpaceX's Hawthorne control center after the arm connected to a fitting on the side of Dragon.

Pettit steered the capsule to the Earth-facing port on the Harmony module while fellow station crewmember Joe Acaba locked the hatches together. The crew unloaded the Dragon's cargo over the weekend and placed used equipment back inside for the return to Earth. The Dragon is the only cargo-carrying spacecraft designed to return safely to the planet rather than burn up in the atmosphere.

"We all remember the transcontinental railroad that opened the Western frontier," Pettit told reporters. "It was celebrated and completed by a golden spike. This is kind of the equivalent. No one remembers who pounded it in, but its completion was important and remembered."

Reversing the process a few days later, Pettit pulled Dragon away from its port on May 31 and released it to fly on its own again. As planned, the Dragon fired its thrusters to move away from the station's vicinity. Dragon released the trunk and its solar arrays before turning its heat shield toward Earth for the fiery plunge through the atmosphere.

Descending under a canopy of parachutes, the Dragon splashed down hundreds of miles west of Baja California to be recovered by ships and taken to port.

Musk said the ambitious mission should ease concerns people had about the rocket, spacecraft and future plans.

"There was reason to doubt that we would succeed because there wasn't a precedent for what we achieved," Musk said. "I think those reasons no longer remain having done what we have done so I hope those doubts are put to rest."

How To Pick The Healthiest Frozen Treats

  • Ice Cream

It's easy to go overboard when you're serving yourself from a party-size tub of ice cream at a cookout, but aim for about half a cup, or roughly the size of half of your fist, says Heller, which could still run you nearly 200 calories and 11 grams of fat, according to the USDA.

If you're ordering at an ice cream shop, beware the generous server who extends your swirl well above the brim of the cup, she warns. "You think, 'Awesome, I'm getting extra!' But you're also getting extra calories."

When buying your own ice cream, Zied recommends comparing the labels of a few different brands for fat, calories and sugar. Keep in mind the amount of sugar listed does include sugar that occurs naturally in milk.

If nothing but your favorite full-fat flavor will do, just shrink the portion size even more. Zied says she serves ice cream to her young son in a three to four ounce Dixie cup.

Flickr photo by TheCulinaryGeek

  • Frozen Yogurt

It's true that the probiotics in fro-yo can provide some health benefits in comparison to ice creams, but be aware that that Pinkberry isn't always that much lower in calories than regular ice cream. It's easy to get caught up in the idea that frozen yogurt is good for you, but portion sizes still apply. Nutrition information is often based on a half-cup serving, says Heller, but then the stores don't even stock a half-cup-sized dish, and you really have no idea what you're getting, she says. Eyeball a half-fist-size portion and only add a teaspoon or two of toppings.

Also, keep in mind that not all products labeled "frozen yogurt" contain any live active cultures, according to the National Yogurt Association. Some manufacturing procedures actually kill off these good bacteria, so look for the Live & Active Cultures seal.

Flickr photo by pamlau

  • Frozen Kefir Or Greek Yogurt

These healthy buzzwords have acquired a bit of a health halo -- you might think they're better for you than they really are. Both Zied and Heller recommend comparing the ingredients, fat and sugar content before automatically grabbing a pint of frozen Greek. For example, the new Ben and Jerry's Greek flavors have around 200 calories per half-cup serving, 7 to 8 grams of fat and 23 to 26 grams of sugar.

But you can make your own, says Heller. Start off with some fat-free plain Greek or regular yogurt, and add layers of your favorite fruit or a little honey into an ice pop mold and freeze. Roll the finished product in granola or chopped nuts for some crunch, or dip it in dark chocolate, she suggests.

Flickr photo by slgckgc

  • Frozen Fruit Bars

When comparing store-bought brands, look for a bar that's no more than 100 or 150 calories, says Zied. There are some 100 percent fruit juice bars out there, she says, but plenty also brag that they're "made with real fruit" or "contain half a serving of fruit" that, upon closer, inspection list sugar before any real fruit on the nutrition label. And don't forget that any pops with coconut will be higher in calories and fat than other fruit bars.

You can also make your own, by freezing 100 percent fruit juice in an ice pop mold, says Heller. That way, you control what goes into the mix. Dilute high-calorie juice with water or add chunks of your favorite fruit (or veggies!).

Flickr photo by jessicafm

  • Sorbet

Often fat-free, this fruit-based frozen treat can be a slimmer option than ice cream or yogurt, but will still contain plenty of sugar, both naturally occurring in fruit and sometimes added. "Look for fruit on the label," says Zied, and for as few ingredients as possible, "because that makes it closer to being somewhat of a real food," she says.

Flickr photo by Angela Schmeidel Randall

  • Fudge Pops

The 100 to 150 calorie rule of thumb applies here as well. And beware of lengthy ingredients lists. "The shorter the list probably the less harmful the product is," says Zied. A number of brands now make low-calorie chocolately treats and even some that are fat-free.

  • Flavored Ice Pops

The childhood favorite is low in calories, thanks to its relatively small size. But prominent ingredients include high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and food colorings.

It's best to skip sweets like these, says Zied. "I'd much rather someone have ice cream or frozen yogurt, actual real foods," she says. "If you can't identify where it comes from, it's not the greatest thing to have."

Flickr photo by PakaLoeff

  • Slush

Slush is guilty of many of the same problems as flavored ice pops, and it usually comes in a larger serving, so beware of too many empty calories and artificial flavors.

However, Heller suggests a fun way to make your own and serve at cookouts. All it takes is some partially-frozen, 100 percent fruit juice, she says. Throw it in a blender and toss in your favorite chopped fruit.

Flickr photo by Benimoto

  • Ice Cream Sandwich

Depending on the brand, especially if that sandwich is made with cookies, this treat can run high in fat and added sugar. Zied suggests having just a small piece of one, if it's really what you're craving.

"Just because you're given a whole ice cream sandwich doesn't mean you have to have the whole thing," she says. "Cut it up into little pieces and share," she suggests. "You can savor it a little bit more that way."

Heller points out that many brands will also contain trans fats in the wafers. If you're able to examine the package, keep an eye out for any partially hydrogenated oils or palm oil, she says, which many manufacturers are using now instead of trans fats. They have been linked to heart disease in some research.

Flickr photo by roland

  • Non-Dairy Frozen Treats

"Organic, all-natural, gluten-free, vegan -- we assume these mean healthy, and that's absolutely not always the case," says Heller. Still, if you're opting to forgo dairy for health or diet reasons, there are more choices than ever before. "If you can't have dairy, there are other options that are equivalent in many ways," says Zied, "but they may not be lower in calories, they may have just as much added sugar. Don't be under a delusion that you're saving much unless you look at the packages and compare them," she says.

The fun-sized Tofutti Cuties are a perfect example, she says. They provide a tasty, dairy-free option for those who need it, but at 130 calories, and with sugar and corn syrup as the second and third ingredients, these bites are still comparable, health-wise, to a dairy ice cream sandwich.

Flickr photo by JoeInSouthernCA

India, Myanmar to explore new initiatives to boost ties: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said India and Myanmar would explore new initiatives and define a roadmap for further boosting of bilateral ties with focus on trade, investment and connectivity as he begins a three-day visit to that country.
Pointing out that India attaches the

highest importance to its relations with Myanmar, a "close friend and neighbour", Singh said in a statement shortly before his departure for Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's new capital, that "recent years have witnessed significant strengthening and expansion of our bilateral relations" and his coming visit "will provide an opportunity to review the progress in implementation of decisions" taken during the "highly successful visit" of Myanmar President Thein Sein to India in October last year.

"We will also consider new initiatives and define a roadmap for the further development of our cooperation in the years ahead," said Singh who will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Myanmar in quarter of a century since Rajiv Gandhi's trip to that country in December, 1987.

The Prime Minister, who will hold talks with Sein on Monday at Nay Pyi Taw, said that during his visit to Myanmar he hopes to focus on "stronger trade and investment links, development of border areas, improving connectivity between our two countries and building capacity and human resources".

"We also hope to sign a number of agreements and MoUs to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation in these areas, besides promoting people-to-people contacts," Singh said.

Singh, who will also meet leader of the opposition and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon on Tuesday, said India welcomes Myanmar's "transition to democratic governance and the steps taken by the government of Myanmar towards a more broad-based and inclusive reconciliation process and offered? to share "democratic experiences" with that country.

Since taking office more than a year ago, President Thein Sein has surprised many critics by releasing Suu Kyi from 15 years of house arrest and allowing her National League for Democracy (NLD) to contest and win parliamentary elections in April this year, freeing other political prisoners, opening talks with ethnic rebels and easing media censorship and restoring labour unions right to strike.

Singh said he was looking forward to address a cross-section of Myanmar society and interact with the Indian and Indian-origin community in Yangon on the final day of his visit.

The Prime Minister said the "shared history and culture" of India and Myanmar "provides a strong basis for the enhancement of contacts between the people of our two countries" and India remains "committed to a close, cooperative and mutually beneficial partnership with the government and people of Myanmar".

Singh said he is looking forward to visiting the historic Shwedagon Pagoda, a testament to 2600 years of Buddhist heritage, and the mazar (the grave) of the last Emperor of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar, in Yangon.

The Pagoda houses the hairs of Lord Buddha who had given them to two merchant brothers in return for a honey cake they offered to him.

High on Singh's agenda of talks with Myanmar President Thein Sein, a former army general heading a quasi-civilian government, will be deepening ties in energy, security, connectivity, trade and information technology.

The two countries are expected to sign a number of agreements in energy sector and connectivity during the visit.

The high-points among the slew of agreements will be the ones relating to an offshore gas block awarded to private Indian company Jubilant Energy in global competition and a passenger bus service between Imphal and Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city after Yangon.

Behold: The First Video Taken with Google Glasses

Google has unveiled the first video taken with its sci-fi eyewear concept, Project Glass. The topic: jumping and flipping on a trampoline, doing a backflip while wearing Google glasses.

Google launched its Project Glass goggles on Google+ in April, and the news sent the concept of Google?s futuristic glasses ? which would project augmented reality images into wearers? field of vision ? into a worldwide frenzy on the web. Although Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been testing the device and teasing pictures to show the Internet what it can do, this is the first time we?ve seen a video taken by the device itself.

SEE ALSO: Google: Here?s What Our Sci-Fi Glasses Look Like

In addition to taking pictures and video, the glasses can perform many tasks performed by a smartphone. For example, while wearing the glasses, you would be able to see weather forecasts and what?s on your calendar for the day, as well as send text messages and emails to friends and family ? all projected right before your eyes.

Google told Mashable in April that selling the glasses this year would be ?very unlikely.?

Would you want a pair of Google Glasses? Do you think this is the way we will live our lives in the future? Let us know in the comments.

Obama, GOP pay tribute to fallen and serving troops

(CNN) - President Barack Obama and Rep. Lynn Jenkins marked the Memorial Day weekend by paying tribute to American service members during their weekly addresses Saturday.

"Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend," Obama said. "In town squares and national cemeteries, in public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who loved their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it."

? Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

Jenkins, a Republican whose Kansas district includes Fort Leavenworth, called Memorial Day "a time to pause and thank the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who have died in the defense of our country."

She and Obama also recognized the sacrifices of those serving in the armed forces.

"As we honor the fallen, we pray for our sons and daughters who are risking their lives so that we may live in freedom and security," Jenkins said.

An important way to honor their service, she continued, is by building the economy so that they can find jobs when they return home.

"Unfortunately, roughly 22 million of our fellow citizens are struggling to find a good-paying full-time job in President Obama's economy," she said, and touted a GOP-backed set of measures called the "Republicans' Plan for America's Job Creators."

"This week, as part our jobs plan, my Republican colleagues and I spread out across the country to highlight the economic potential of our domestic energy resources. As part of this American Energy & Jobs Tour, I visited an oil well in Girard, Kansas ? a small town whose proud energy workers make a big contribution to our region's economy," Jenkins added.

She called for removing "government barriers to all forms of domestic energy production," as well as repeal of the president's health care law and congressional passage of a federal budget.

Obama also called for efforts on the home front "to let these families and veterans know that they are not alone."

"We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us," he said. "By making sure that they get the health care and benefits they need, by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families, and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect."

More than 6,400 U.S. military personnel have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, including Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn in Iraq. An additional 48,000 service members have been wounded in those operations.

At least 3,100 of those deaths were due to improvised explosive devices, the U.S. military said.

Obama said his position includes "no higher honor than serving as ... commander-in-chief."

"But with that honor comes a solemn responsibility - one that gets driven home every time I sign a condolence letter, or meet a family member whose life has been turned upside down," he said. "No words can ever bring back a loved one who has been lost. No ceremony can do justice to their memory. No honor will ever fill their absence."

He visited Afghanistan in May, landing under the cover of night to sign a Strategic Partnership Agreement that laid out terms between the U.S. and Afghanistan after U.S. and other NATO troops withdraw by the end of 2014. Approximately 90,000 U.S. troops are among the 130,000 NATO troops in the nation.

Operations in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001 with airstrikes, and the U.S. military first acknowledged a ground operation 12 days later.

The last U.S. combat troops left Iraq in December 2011. President George W. Bush announced U.S. troops were entering the country on March 19, 2003, 48 hours after issuing an ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the United States deploying a significant military presence in Vietnam. In 1962, the U.S. sent some 10,000 military advisers to join the 900 U.S. military advisers already in the country.

"It's another chance to honor those we lost at places like Hue, Khe Sanh, Danang and Hamburger Hill," Obama said in his address.

Obama said he would mark Memorial Day with tributes at Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Patrick not looking back at what she left behind

(AP) ? With Danica Patrick in North Carolina racing stock cars, the Indianapolis 500 will go off on Sunday without an American woman in the field for the first time since 1999.

That's just one of the problems facing her former series, but it's not really her problem.

Patrick has moved on to NASCAR, and can't worry about what she left behind.

"I was ready to leave IndyCar. I wanted to be here," she said from Charlotte Motor Speedway, where she'll race in Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600.

"When you are not missing something, longing for something, you don't really think about it that much. It's like that girlfriend you didn't want to have anymore. You don't think about her anymore. Or ex-husband. You just don't. Indy, I have lots of great memories from there and probably the part of me that doesn't feel quite as longing for it is that there is still a chance that I could do it again. It's not gone."

It makes for a strange situation this weekend regarding Patrick.

She's not in Indianapolis for the first time in seven years, but she's still been a topic of conversation at various points since the track opened May 9.

James Hinchcliffe, her replacement in the Go Daddy car, flirted with the pole and will start second in Sunday's race. It's been a breakthrough month for Hinchcliffe, who is started to build his own brand and establish his identity as both a colorful character and a skilled driver.

It had been hard in IndyCar for drivers to emerge from Patrick's shadow as she dominated the media spotlight. It exploded in 2005, when she finished fourth in her Indy debut and actual winner Dan Wheldon felt compelled to have a T-shirt made that said "Actually 'Won' The Indy 500" to poke fun at the attention Patrick was receiving.

The series has struggled to develop stars since and her departure creates the overdue opportunity.

"You've got so many other guys in here that deserve a chance, that have a story or have a personality," said Graham Rahal. "If she were here, you probably wouldn't be talking to any of them. It's good for all the other guys to get a chance at it now."

In NASCAR, Patrick is embraced throughout the industry and welcomed in the garage by drivers willing to help her adjust. Everyone recognizes that Patrick brings more exposure to NASCAR, and the 6 percent increase ESPN has seen in its Nationwide Series ratings this season has got to be at least partially because of her.

So in that sense, IndyCar's loss in NASCAR's gain.

"Danica brought a lot of interest from people that were not really involved in racing," said former Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever, an analyst for ABC's race day broadcast. "My daughter follows Danica Patrick, whether she's racing here or somewhere else. But there are a lot of very talented drivers in IndyCar, and I think the series will just pick up and keep on going forward."

Cheever's daughter is just one example of the reach Patrick has with casual sports fans and young girls. When Patrick returned to the go-kart track she raced at as a kid, she was surprised to see that "30 to 40 percent" of the karters that day were girls.

But they struggle to make it to the top levels, at least in America.

Patrick and Johanna Long are the only two females racing in one of NASCAR's top two levels. Patrick on Sunday night will become the first woman since Janet Guthrie in 1976 to race in the Coca-Cola 600.

In IndyCar, where Sarah Fisher has become a mother and is now running her own race team, there are no active American women drivers. Sunday's field in the Indy 500 has three women, Katherine Legge, who is British, Simona de Silvestro from Switzerland and Brazilian Ana Beatriz.

Patrick speculates that the low numbers are based on a shallower talent pool, and there will be more women racers as the years go on.

"If it takes one out of a hundred guys to find a good one -- I'm just using a random number -- one out of hundred girls takes a hell of a lot longer than a guy," she said. "It just takes more time. I'm sure that there are all kinds of different genders and ethnicities out there trying racing. I think that in general as a culture in this country we are very open to new and different things. It is just going to take time."

Screening Finds Skin Cancer, But Does It Save Lives? ? Get-Right ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Doctors find a high number of malignant tumors when a state-wide skin cancer screening program is introduced, says a new study.

Based on results from a program in Germany, researchers say 116 people need to be screened for skin cancer and five people need to have a biopsy to find one malignant tumor.
