Generation Stress? Expert has advice on raising resilient, successful ...

By Catherine Ivey Lee

Today?s students might be the smartest generation on record. Their IQs are higher, their GPAs are numerical masterpieces, and their resumes are bursting with achievement.

But they are also the most stressed-out generation in recent history, warned parenting expert Michele Borba during a recent talk at The Bishop?s School on ?Raising Self-Reliant Kids to Strive and Survive.? WeCare, a consortium of six independent schools, including Bishop?s and La Jolla Country Day, sponsored the event.

Parenting expert Michele Borba speaks to parents about helping kids manage stress in a talk held at The Bishop?s School.

?The American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics are saying we have never seen such high level of stress in our kids,? said Borba, an educational psychologist and author of 23 books on parenting. Having gotten into prestigious colleges, many of today?s best and brightest feel overwhelmed, anxious and depressed once there, Borba said.

Alarmed college counselors have dubbed them, ?Generation Stress,? as well as ?crispies? and ?tea cups? ? some students are burned out before college even begins while others break like china at the first failure they experience without a parent around.

It?s not just college students. In a survey at WeCare?s consortium schools, middle and high school students ranked ?feeling pressure from their parents? and ?time management? as their top worries, according to the group?s chair, Jill Skrezyna.

Why are kids struggling? Borba blames today?s pressure-filled and competitive culture in part. In addition, she said that despite their best intentions, today?s parents can make things worse by protecting their children from setbacks.

?Researchers are saying that what would really help our children above all else is not just to have that IQ and smartness, but the ability to be able to bounce back when the inevitable thing called a failing experience happens,? Borba said.

?If we rescue them along the way, we don?t build up what?s called psychological immunity. So when the real tough stuff happens the kid just falls apart,? she said.

Borba believes a better way for parents to help their children is to teach them skills to withstand life?s storms such as self-reliance, resilience, perseverance, even grit ? a catchall characteristic being touted in this fall?s bestselling book ?How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character? by Paul Tough.

Borba?s advice for parents:

1) Start at home. Research shows that students with the highest self-esteem and strongest sense of character were raised by parents who showed unconditional love and acceptance, set firm, yet achievable expectations, and communicated openly and respectfully. ?Kids say their No. 1 pressure is to not let their parents down,? Borba said. ?They need to know, ?I love you and I like you for who you are,? she said. ?I accept your strengths but I can also identify your weaknesses.? ?

2) Build coping skills. Don?t rescue children from disappointments and failures. ?Help them to recognize that ?I can make it and I can survive it,? ? she said.

3) How you praise matters. Citing research by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, Borba said telling kids they are smart or did a good job on a test is ?actually one of the worst things you can do.? Praising outcomes teaches children that their intelligence and ability to succeed is fixed. By praising effort instead, children see the value of hard work, which will help them for life.

4) Say no. Today?s children are used to getting what they want. But delaying gratification builds determination and perseverance skills. If they don?t really need something, stretch out how long children can wait for something or make them put it as a goal, Borba said.

5) Help kids manage stress. Techniques such as deep breathing or yoga helps children get through stressful times, while being organized helps them avoid them. Teach students how to prioritize homework goals, to manage time and to cut back on activities. ?Kids are desperate for time management skills. Help them,? she said.

(AP) ? Relatives of a slain 12-year-old girl from southern New Jersey said Thursday they want to avoid jeopardizing the criminal case and will not comment on the revelation that three days before she disappeared, she may have exchanged online messages with one of the teenagers accused of killing her.

"We want swift justice for Autumn," said Paul Spadofora, a great uncle and godfather of Autumn Pasquale, whose body was found in a recycling bin Monday near the teenagers' home. "We don't want to jeopardize the case."

Two brothers, 15 and 17, were charged with murder and other crimes against the girl, who would have turned 13 on Oct. 29. Authorities say the younger boy lured her to their home by promising to trade bicycle parts.

Both teens are due in court Friday for a hearing on whether they should remain in a juvenile detention facility.

A Facebook account that appears to belong to Justin Robinson had a picture posted in August of a BMX bike. On Oct. 17, a post apparently from Autumn asked: "Is tht ur bike?"

The two exchanged a volley of messages in abbreviated language. He answered, "yeuop." She proclaimed, "Thts sexy!" He responded, "lol thx" and later added: "yess cme 2 my house."

The exchange is no longer available on Facebook, but someone took a screenshot and saved it to the photo-sharing site ImageShack.

Autumn disappeared Saturday, three days after the exchange.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office would not comment on the postings.

Authorities said Anita Saunders, the mother of the two suspects, called police because she was concerned about something one of her son's posted on Facebook. But police have not disclosed exactly what the posting said.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said the mother's tip led investigators to the recycling bin behind a vacant home next to hers where Autumn's body was found ? and to her sons.

Authorities have not released the names of the teens because they are charged as juveniles, though prosecutors say they are likely to seek to have the case moved to adult court.

Neighbors and other community members identify the boys as 17-year-old Dante Robinson and 15-year-old Justin Robinson. The boys' father and maternal grandfather both declined to speak about the boys on Thursday, but did not deny their names. Their names have been widely reported in the media.

Since the boys were arrested on Tuesday, the girl's family has criticized authorities for not having a more intense search sooner after she was reported missing ? and asked the state Attorney General's Office to investigate the response.

Dalton defended his office's response, saying officials "poured their hearts and souls" into the case. Up to 200 law enforcement officials and hundreds more volunteers joined the search.

CleanMyPC

There are numerous utilities designed to whip your computer back into tip-top condition after a fragmented hard drive, junk files, and registry issues slows system performance?CleanMyPC is one of them. The $39.99 utility does a decent job of whipping worn PCs back into shape, but its license limitation?the price tag covers just one PC!?will make other apps such as Comodo System Utilities, Iolo System Mechanic 11?, and SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner?more attractive.

The Basics
The Windows 8 and Windows 7-compatible CleanMyPC features a soft, attractive blue-and-white interface. It's very simply designed; the left column houses My Computer, Hibernation, Registry Maintenance, Complete Uninstall, Gadgets & Extensions Manager, Autorun, Privacy Guard, and Secure Erase tools. They are designed to free up hard drive space, safeguard your privacy, and repair the registry?the source of many a Windows problem.

A minute or so after I clicked the scan icon in the main screen, CleanMyPC revealed several GB of "unneeded data." Unlike SlimWare SlimCleaner Utilities, CleanMyPC didn't serve up detailed listings of what needed to go. It did, however, reveal how much free space it freed up and what I could do with it. 1.9GB of space, for example, is enough room to store 400 MP3s tracks or 1,000 photos.

Performance Improvements
I tested CleanMyPC's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing two tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool and measuring boot times?before and after running the software. I ran each test three times and averaged the results. CleanMyPC scrubbed the system (a 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and an 80GB Intel SSD drive) to achieve a 5,914 Geekbench score and 50.3 seconds boot time.

My testbeds performance improved after I ran CleanMyPC. The GeekBench score rose to 6,454 (which beat Iolo System Mechanic 11 by two points to take the crown) and the boot time decreased to 39.4 seconds (which placed middle of the road, and eight seconds behind Iolo System Mechanic 11). Check out our chart for to see how CleanMyPC fared against competing products.

Those numbers wouldn't mean much if it didn't translate into user-noticeable improvements?fortunately, it does. Windows and menus opened with extra pep that wasn't present when the machine was junked up. So did heavy-duty apps like iTunes. Still, I wished for an overall faster system boot.

CleanMyPC's biggest issue isn't performance, but price. The $39.99 price tag grants you just one license. Comodo System Utilities (free), Iolo System Mechanic 11 ($49.99), and SlimCleaner (free) have no such limitations?you can install the software on as many PCs as you wish. CleanMyPC offers two license ($59.99) and five license ($99.95) tiers, but they're pricey. If you live in a multi-PC home, you may want to look elsewhere.

Should You Use CleanMyPC To Clean Up Your PC?
CleanMyPC delivered the best GeekBench performance of all the tune-up utilities tested (beating Iolo System Mechanic 11 by a couple of points), but it drops the ball in terms of license limitations and it's boot time improvement isn't the best. If you need to tune-up just one PC CleanMyPC is worth a consideration, but Iolo System Mechanic 11 and SlimWare Utilities Slimcleaner are better all-around choices.

European group warned about observing Texas elections

by WALT ZWIRKO

Updated today at 7:00 PM

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued a warning Tuesday to international groups hoping to observe the November 6 general election: Steer clear of polling places.

In a stern letter addressed to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Abbott noted that "OSCE?s representatives are not authorized by Texas law to enter a polling place" and added it "may be a criminal offense" for them to get within 100 feet of a voting station.

"Failure to comply with these requirements could subject the OSCE?s representatives to criminal prosecution for violating state law," Abbott wrote.

The attorney general noted in his letter that OSCE had "reportedly met with" other organizations that have filed lawsuits challenging Texas voter ID laws. Abbott singled out Project Vote as being "closely affiliated with ACORN, which collapsed in disgrace after its role in a widespread voter-registration fraud scheme was uncovered."

Project Vote has been critical of a Texas law requiring photo ID at polling places, although a federal court has blocked its implementation for the general election.

Abbott added that while international groups like OSCE are welcome to learn more about the election process in Texas, "groups and individuals from outside the United States are not allowed to influence or interfere with the election process in Texas."

WFAA.com has asked the OSCE and Project Vote to respond to the attorney general's letter.

Members of organizations from the United States, including former President Jimmy Carter's The Carter Center, routinely observe elections in other countries to help ensure that balloting is conducted fairly and without fraud.

Mandeville Catholic church seeks new trial in legal struggle with city ...

Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church has filed a motion for a new trial in its lengthy legal battle with local government?over construction of new place of worship in old Mandeville. The motion stems from a ruling earlier this month by state District Judge William Crain in St. Tammany Parish that essentially upheld the Mandeville Zoning Board's denial of the church's request for a permit to build a $13 million sanctuary across Lafitte Street from the existing OLL chapel. It seeks a new trial or reconsideration of Crain's ruling.

In the motion, attorneys for OLL argue that the court's Oct. 10 judgment upholds the zoning board's denial of a permit to build the church on the basis that the project did not meet minimum parking requirements. While it denied the permit, the motion states the Zoning Board "never determined that OLL's application showed insufficient parking." Therefore, the court went beyond its review authority and "supplied a new reason to deny OLL's permit -- one that was not part of the record and therefore not properly before this court."

OLL attorneys referred questions on the motion to the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Sarah McDonald, spokesperson for the archdiocese, said the motion filed Monday is a step in the legal process. "The parish (OLL) is continuing to explore the options and this motion is part of that process," she said.

The archdiocese and Archbishop Gregory Aymond support OLL in its efforts to build "a church that can accommodate its parishioners," McDonald said.

The church project has been a lightning rod of controversy in the old Mandeville community. Opponents fear the new, 16,715-square-foot Gothic Revival church would cause drainage, traffic and parking problems in the lakefront community and would not fit in with surrounding buildings. Supporters said the existing 465-seat church is way too small to accommodate crowds that attend weekend Masses, which forces OLL to use a multi-purpose building that houses a gymnasium for some services. The proposed new church would have 1,028 seats.

Brawl Erupts During Minnesota High School Soccer Game (VIDEO)

A brawl that broke out at the end of a high school soccer game in Minnesota Thursday night has caused both the Minnesota State High School League and the Maple Grove police department to launch separate investigations into the incident.

Prairie Seeds Academy defeated Totino Grace 2-1 in a match to determine which team would advance to the state tournament, DeadSpin notes. Just moments before the end of the game, however, a fight broke out on the field.

Totino Grace co-captain Ryan Zurbay told Fox Twin Cities that the first punch was thrown in the final seconds of the game by a Prairie Seeds player. However, Prairie Seeds head coach and athletic director Youssef Darbaki said his players had reported hearing derogatory comments by the other team, which could explain what sparked the fight.

Still, the situation was baffling to Darbaki. "Why would you fight while winning the game?" he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The fight could lead to criminal charges and suspensions that would keep some players out of the tournament, according to the paper.

Totino Grace Athletic Director Mike Smith told KARE 11 he was disappointed with how the game ended.

"There were a lot of kids that worked really hard to get to that point. It's too bad the ending is what people want to talk about because the game was so good," he said.

Prairie Seeds is scheduled to play Duluth's Marshall School on Friday in the state quarterfinals. The team will have to wait for the League's verdict to see if they'll be playing at full strength. The Star Tribune reports that a decision could be reached as early as Monday.

LIVE BLOG: Classroom to Career (Investing in Tomorrow's ...

Citizen IBM blogged live from the Classroom to Career conference at the?Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College?in New York City.

This forum gathered thought leaders and experts in K-12 and post-secondary education and training, government, and business for a discussion of how to address America?s skills gap. The forum was designed to promote a dialogue on the future of education, and on the role of public-private partnerships in driving U.S. economic competitiveness.

Please comment on the discussion below to keep the conversation going.

All Times Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

Remarks by U.S. Secretary of Education?Arne Duncan

You can?t have great schools without great leadership, and P-TECH is doing a great job.

I am more and more convinced that the skills crisis is a huge wake-up call for those of us in education to do more. Students need to know that what they?re doing is relevant and will lead to good jobs.?P-TECH students understand that. By contrast, some students drop out of school because it?s too easy, not too hard. They?re not engaged.

YouTube Preview Image

My plea to the business community here is that we need you to do more. Educators can?t do it by themselves. If you want the next generation of consumers to buy your products or work in your firms, you have to help prepare them.

When you see companies like IBM stepping up, it?s amazing what can happen. Mentorships, internships and more help motivate students who often have to overcome a wide variety of obstacles from challenging home lives to lengthy commutes just to get to school.

We also need you to help break down the barriers of social isolation. We also need to establish and maintain high standards. We can?t reduce standards to make politicians look good. The business community has to demand high standards, both for achievement and for graduation rates. They have to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

Finally, the business community needs to get its employees involved. We need to pressure ourselves to speed up, not slow down. The education system has not kept up with changes in the global marketplace. The middle class, skilled labor jobs that once were available to high school dropouts are gone and they?re not coming back.

We love to collaborate with?IBM?because IBM and Roosevelt are long-term partners. It was here in this house that FDR hired?Frances Perkins?to develop the?Social Security program, which would not have been possible without IBM technology.

IBM provided the computers and equipment to carry out what was characterized as the biggest accounting project of all time ? a landmark public-private partnership. It was in this house that The New Deal was planned, along with many of Eleanor Roosevelt?s education initiatives.

In order to have great citizens, we need to have educated citizens. That is the mission of?Hunter College.

_______

02:25 p.m. ??Litow:?How can we come up with strategies to prepare young people for the jobs of the 21st?Century? We can?t do it without a set of innovative strategies that involve educators, employers and communities. We need for school systems to partner with higher education to provide a bridge between K-12 and postsecondary education. In addition, these entities need input from business to insure that their curricula are rigorous relevant to the demands of the global marketplace.

New York?s?Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH)?is an innovative model that can be brought to scale nationwide. But to do that, we will need a larger number of partners and collaborators.

We need to provide this opportunity to all students, not just a selected few.

_______

02:30 p.m. ??Anthony Carnevale, Director, Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce:?It?s been true since 1983 that the more education one has, the more one has the potential to earn. But that?s not the whole story. Not only does a person need more education, he or she also needs the right kind of education. What you take matters more than how much education you have. Career pathway and connection to occupation drives earnings.

The purpose of employment and career has become central, not just to earnings but to one?s potential to live fully in his or her time.

_______

02:37 p.m. ??Mary Fifield, President, Bunker Hill Community College:?It simply makes good sense to connect young people to college early. If we can find a strategy to combine in a contextualized manner coursework with skills acquisition, then we are able to prepare young people to enter careers directly.

Bill Swanson, CEO of Raytheon ? himself a graduate of a community college ? pioneered partnership between community colleges and employers. Member companies pre-screen students, who are assigned a mentor and a workplace ?buddy? for their learn-to-earn experience.

02:42 p.m. ??Cynthia Marshall, President, AT&T North Carolina:?Preparing our young people for the future is, to me, the true definition of Homeland Security. The only way that I can ensure a diverse and globally competitive workforce is to get involved. It?s pure business.

We need to open our minds as business leaders. The majority of jobs at my company ? AT&T North Carolina ? require postsecondary training, but not a four-year degree.

02:50 p.m. ? Question from?Susan Taylor, National CARES Mentoring Movement:
Why do we hear so much about illiteracy, our national shame?

Marshall:?We?re working with organizations like yours to help spread literacy as we prepare young people for jobs.

Carnevale:?It?s worked for us to be very good at the top. We were very good at that. We were flexible. And we were much larger than our competitors in the marketplace. But we lag behind in sub-baccalaureate and baccalaureate education, and our advantages of flexibility and scale are going away. So the cost of doing business as we have in the past is now too high.

_______

03:00 p.m. ? Panel 2 ? What Works: Preparing Students for College and Career

Shael Polakow-Suransky, Chief Academic Officer and Senior Deputy Chancellor, New York City Department of Education:?We?re at the beginning of a renaissance in career and technical education (CTE). We?ve begun to shift to model to consider what professions young people need to be prepared for. We?re looking to replicate the P-TECH model with a focus on the health care field. And we?re trying to build powerful industry partnerships that will align what companies need with what young people learn in school.

Litow:?CTE can prepare graduates for both careers?and?higher education.

Matthew Goldstein, Chancellor, City University of New York (CUNY):?The U.S. faces a national security problem ? not from our borders? being porous, but because our competitiveness has been compromised. Unless we get it better than we are getting it now, we will be relegated in our standard of living to a place that none of us wants to be.

On the ground level, we have to break out of the silos that often have presented us with unnecessary distractions in how we educate our young people. Our path must be a path of collaboration.

P-TECH is a great example of what can be accomplished with cooperation across sectors. That?s what the data shows us.

_______

03:05 p.m. ? Panel 2 ? Continued

Litow:?What are the barriers to cooperation?

John King, Commissioner, NYSED:?We have to re-think our definitions of career and technical education. One of our challenges is changing the tone of the old thinking about CTE. We have to view CTE as a tradition on par with other academic pathways.

The final barrier is cost. We have to make it possible for these grades 9 through 14 programs to be funded in a sustainable way. It?s time to allow students in early college high school programs to take advantage of state college financial aid. It?s a smart investment that will improve our graduation rates and the potential for the futures of these young people.

_______

03:15 p.m. ? Panel 2 ? Continued

Kathryn Wylde, President and CEO of the Partnership for New York City:?The inflexibility of the system, the complexity of education laws and a host of other impediments are slowing our progress. There are many, many jobs available for people at below the Ph.D. level that employers simply have not been able to fill. We need demand-driven programs instead of supply-side driven programs.

Litow:?We?ve identified the problems and some potential solutions. Some of the barriers to success sound large, but they will fall with the right push. But the question: how do we bring these innovations to scale? How do we make them less the exception and more the rule?

Audience Question:?What can be put in place to make it feasible for public-private partnerships to work together?

Litow to panel:?Do we need some sort of government structure to make sure this works?

Wylde:?That model has been successful in the affordable housing sector, and it could be successful here.

Goldstein:?There is a cultural divide that has to be taken very seriously. To build a system for career and business education, we need collaboration from the business community. We?re not getting that now. We need businesses to take the lead in helping shape curricula that map students directly to jobs ? and school and college faculty need to collaborate. But building another bureaucratic architecture is probably not the way. We need leaders of the various participating sectors to lead the way.

_______

03:25 p.m. ? Panel 2 ? Continued

Polakow-Suransky:?Powerful partners make all the difference, especially in helping students understand the connection between their school work and their employment potential.

King:?We have to shift our definitions of success to be more relevant to connecting classroom to career.

Audience Question:?What about communities where the local employer is a small or medium-sized business. How do we avoid using the schools to create ?company towns??

Litow:?What we?re talking about is a more systemic level of change here. There are a variety of tiers of involvement, from the type of involvement of a company like IBM to companies that would be interested in a less-intensive level of involvement. The common characteristic is the willingness to collaborate. We?re asking businesses, in addition to educators, to change.

Audience Question:?What about teacher training when industry expertise lies in the industry?

Litow:?One answer is IBM?s Transition to Teaching program that helps people who are interested in teaching as a second career transition to teaching.

King:?We?re using some of our Race to the Top funds to help reorient teacher training to address the gaps in industry demand. But we still need to do a better job of connecting what?s taught in schools of education to what?s happening in the marketplace.

_______

03:39 p.m. ? Panel 2 ? Continued

Goldstein:?We have to focus on the basics. For example, mathematics education in this country is in dire straits. So we have to improve standards for certification.

We also will have to create incentives and competition to reward teachers and institutions that are doing well. We can do all of these things, but it?s going to take resolve.

Audience Question:?What about so-called ?soft skills? that also contribute to success?

King:?These skills are important because groups of students who excel in certain areas tend to work in groups, versus less successful groups where individuals tend to work alone. Learning how to work together is integral with other types of academic and career success. This is why the Common Core Standards matter. They help students develop a variety of skills.

Question from Opportunity Nation:?How can parents play a more engaged role in their children?s success?

Polakow-Suransky:?When young people understand all of what is expected of them, they are able to build successful communities among their peers. When students push each other to succeed, that becomes a very powerful learning tool. These ideas are not new, but they have been bifurcated ? split between traditional ?academic? tracks and CTE.

_______

03:50 p.m. ? Remarks by U.S. Secretary of Education?Arne Duncan

You can?t have great schools without great leadership, and P-TECH is doing a great job.

I am more and more convinced that the skills crisis is a huge wake-up call for those of us in education to do more. Students need to know that what they?re doing is relevant and will lead to good jobs.?P-TECH students understand that. By contrast, some students drop out of school because it?s too easy, not too hard. They?re not engaged.

_______

04:10 p.m. ? Concluding Remarks

John Bridgeland, President and CEO of Civic Enterprises:?I agree with Tony Carnevale that the purpose of developing students is to allow them to live fully in their time and to create advances in their time. Students need to understand the connection between what they?re doing now and what their expectations are in life. Furthermore, we need to ensure that career and technical education is a viable path to success. Part of that is reducing remediation for jobs that don?t require four-year degrees.

Robert Schwartz, Professor, Harvard Graduate School of Education:?What are the differentiators for success that have worked in other countries? Much of it has to do with building social partnerships ? getting educators and employers to the same table to create educational programs that are relevant and targeted. The strongest European systems also are mainstream systems. Their focus on vocational education goes beyond thinking it is a great thing for other people?s children. These efforts have a direct effect on youth unemployment rates, which are much smaller in countries like Switzerland, for example, than in the U.S.

YouTube Preview Image

Duncan:?The question is about how to scale the model ? about how to create multiple P-TECHs.

Litow:?States and localities will have to take action to make this work.

Dessert Sm?rg?sbord with Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolates

No real recipe to speak of here -- just sharing some photos that I'm proud of and some things I love to eat with Ghirardelli chocolate. Ghirardelli sent me some Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate bars to review, and although I usually pass on reviews, I LOVE their chocolate and had no problem being exuberant about them. My fave has always been the 60% cacao chips/bars, but they have some new flavors I love, too.
Dessert Sm?rg?sbord with Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolates

Recipe by: Willow Bird Baking
Yield: as many servings as you'd like!

I call this a dessert sm?rg?sbord, but if I'm going to be real, I had this for breakfast the other day. The point is, these foods pair beautifully with Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolates any time of day.

Ingredients:
Salted pretzel rods
dates
toasted coconut
toasted pecans
a Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate bar (I prefer the 60% cacao Evening Dream, but Hazelnut Heaven, Toffee Interlude, and Sea Salt Soir?e are close behind!)

Directions:
Hunt and peck your way through the dessert sm?rg?sbord, combining and alternating flavors. I always advise to eat Ghirardelli chocolate with a warm drink or none at all -- cold foods/drinks drastically change the experience by preventing some of the melt that occurs when you chew. That's where all the flavor is! So avoid cold milk and ice cream with your dessert buffet.

Note: While I was compensated for my time and groceries and provided with lots of delicious chocolate, I never, ever share products with you that I'm not personally enthusiastic about, and that's a promise!

To read about how this chocolate relates to a free faucet, see more photos, and enjoy reading about the ridiculous circumstances under which I ate each chocolate bar, please head over to Willow Bird Baking!

At CDC, scientists fight to halt a deadly outbreak

ATLANTA (AP) ? Scattered across the carefully landscaped main campus of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are the staff on the front lines fighting a rare outbreak of fungal meningitis: A scientist in a white lab coat peers through a microscope at fungi on a glass slide. In another room, another researcher uses what looks like a long, pointed eye dropper to suck up DNA samples that will be tested for the suspect fungus.

Not far away in another building is the emergency operations center, which is essentially the war room. There's a low hum of voices as employees work the phones, talking to health officials, doctors and patients who received potentially contaminated pain injections believed to be at the root of the outbreak. Workers sit at rows of computers, gathering data, advising doctors and reaching out to thousands of people who may have been exposed. Overall, dozens of people are working day and night to bring the outbreak under control. More than 200 people in 14 states have been sickened, including 15 who have died.

There is a sense of urgency ? people are dying, and lives could be saved if those who are sickened get treated in time. But it's not a race against a fast-spreading illness like avian flu or SARS ? or even the fictional virus the CDC fails to unravel in the popular TV series "The Walking Dead." Unlike those outbreaks, this strain of meningitis isn't contagious and doesn't spread between people. It is likely isolated to the contaminated steroid, produced by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass.

"This is a very unusual infection," said Dr. John Jernigan, a CDC medical epidemiologist who is leading the clinical investigation team for the outbreak response. "So, treatment recommendations, diagnostic recommendations are all going to be new, and we're learning as we go on this one."

Meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, is not uncommon. But it is usually caused by bacteria, and it is very unusual to see it in patients with normal immune systems, Jernigan said. This strain is caused by a fungus that is common in dirt and grasses ? people routinely come into contact with it without getting sick ? but it has never before been identified as the cause of meningitis.

By Friday morning, officials believed they had reached about 90 percent of those who were potentially affected, Jernigan said. They planned to continue trying to reach every person to see if they've had problems and to warn them to be on the lookout for symptoms, which can include severe headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. The CDC says many of the cases have been mild, but some people had strokes.

A meeting is held each morning to review overnight developments and plot a course of action for the day, and another at the end of the day summarizes the day's developments and looks ahead to the next day. Maps on big screens in the front of the emergency operations center track the states where the tainted medications were sent and the tally of cases reported in affected states.

A few steps away in the joint information center, another team works to keep the information about the outbreak on the CDC's website up to date and disseminate information via the media and other outlets.

In another building on the campus tucked away in the northeast corner of Atlanta, in a part of the CDC that specializes in fungal infections, about 15 scientists in the reference and research labs are logging 12 hours or more a day and working through weekends to test samples coming in from around the country.

Because the lab scientists had never worked with this particular fungus in cerebrospinal fluid before, they had to quickly develop new tests to detect it before they could start analyzing the hundreds of samples ? cerebrospinal fluid samples, cultures and bits of tissue ? sent in from around the country, research lab team leader Ana Litvintseva said.

Dressed in a white coat Friday, Shawn Lockhart, the fungal reference lab team leader, peered through a microscope as images of what looked like red pea pods appeared on a computer screen next to him. Many other closely related fungi look similar, but a tiny dot at the end of a pod told him he was looking at the fungus believed to be at the root of the outbreak.

Normally, the reference lab works on difficult samples sent in from state health departments, while the research lab works on research projects. But the scale of this outbreak means those projects are mostly being shelved at the moment.

"The scale is much, much bigger than we would normally work with," said research lab team leader Ana Litvintseva said. "We are working every weekend and people are here 12 to 13 hours at a time and we're testing samples nonstop."

Brad DeLong: Multiple Sclerosis Patients without Health Insurance ...

A good deal of the rich-poor life expectancy discrepancy increase in America that has emerged in the past generation is due to lack of insurance?

Paul Krugman: Death by Ideology:

Last week, speaking to The Columbus Dispatch, Mr. Romney declared that nobody in America dies because he or she is uninsured: ?We don?t have people that become ill, who die in their apartment because they don?t have insurance.? This followed on an earlier remark by Mr. Romney ? echoing an infamous statement by none other than George W. Bush ? in which he insisted that emergency rooms provide essential health care to the uninsured. These are remarkable statements. They clearly demonstrate that Mr. Romney has no idea what life (and death) are like?. Even the idea that everyone gets urgent care when needed from emergency rooms is false. Yes, hospitals are required by law to treat people in dire need, whether or not they can pay. But that care isn?t free?. Some people can?t or won?t pay, but fear of huge bills can deter the uninsured from visiting the emergency room even when they should. And sometimes they die as a result.

More important, going to the emergency room when you?re very sick is no substitute for regular care, especially if you have chronic health problems. When such problems are left untreated ? as they often are among uninsured Americans ? a trip to the emergency room can all too easily come too late?.

So the reality, to which Mr. Romney is somehow blind, is that many people in America really do die every year because they don?t have health insurance.

How many deaths are we talking about? That?s not an easy question to answer?. [S]tates that expand their Medicaid coverage, and hence provide health insurance to more people, consistently show a significant drop in mortality compared with neighboring states that don?t expand coverage. And surely the fact that the United States is the only major advanced nation without some form of universal health care is at least part of the reason life expectancy is much lower in America than in Canada or Western Europe?
