Three Things To Do Before Hiring More Sales Reps | Business 2 ...

When B2B companies need to increase sales, managers will usually consider hiring more sales reps. This thinking is understandable because many B2B companies have long relied almost exclusively on their salespeople to find and win new business. Today, however, simply putting ?more feet on the street? isn?t likely to produce the volume of new sales that managers are looking for, and even if it does, the cost of those new sales is likely to be unacceptably high.

I?ve written before about why B2B companies should no longer rely exclusively on salespeople to generate new sales leads. Business buyers have fundamentally changed how they make buying decisions, and these changes require a new approach to B2B demand generation. So, before you invest in more sales reps, there are three other steps you should take.

Step 1:? Improve Lead Acquisition Marketing

If your marketing programs aren?t producing at least 40% ? 50% of your qualified sales leads, it?s likely that you aren?t investing enough in lead acquisition marketing or your marketing programs aren?t as effective as they need to be. Marketing must play a larger role in generating new sales leads because in the current environment, business buyers are less receptive to traditional sales prospecting techniques, making such? techniques far less effective and efficient.

For most B2B companies, effective lead acquisition marketing should include a mix of inbound and outbound marketing programs. In both cases, persistence is an important key to success. In today?s environment, marketers must assume that multiple contacts will be required to entice a potential buyer to respond.

Step 2:? Implement a Sound Lead Management Process

Research continues to show that most new sales leads are not ready or willing to engage with a salesperson. We also know, however, that most ?qualified but not ready to buy? prospects will eventually buy from someone. Once a new lead is acquired (meaning that the prospect has identified himself/herself and indicated some level of interest in your product or service), the big challenge for B2B companies is to build the relationship with the prospect until he or she is ready to make a buying decision.

A lead management process encompasses all of the marketing and sales activities that you use with prospects ?from curiosity to close.? The objective of a lead management process is to prevent valuable leads from ?falling through the cracks? and out of the marketing/sales funnel. While a comprehensive lead management process includes many components, the three core elements are:

  • A lead nurturing program that provides prospects relevant, primarily non-promotional information in multiple formats and through multiple channels. The primary objectives of a lead nurturing program are to support prospects throughout the buying process, establish and enhance your credibility, and maintain ?mindshare? with prospects until they are ready to have a serious sales conversation.
  • A lead qualification system that defines appropriate buying process stages and provides a mechanism for estimating where each prospect is in the buying process.
  • A selling process that?s designed to identify legitimate sales opportunities and convert those opportunities into closed deals.

Step 3:? Add a Lead Development Representative

Rather than adding more outside sales reps, hire one or more lead development representativesto support your demand generation efforts. Lead development representatives have two primary responsibilities:

  • They provide the ?human touch? components of your lead nurturing program. In this role, their objective is to use multiple conversations to build rapport with prospects in ways that automated, content-based lead nurturing cannot accomplish.
  • They play a major role in the lead qualification process, and they can be primarily responsible for determining when a prospect meets the criteria to be considered a sales-ready lead. When that occurs, the LDR may also be responsible for arranging the first meeting between a prospect and your sales rep.

Lead development reps can perform these functions more efficiently that regular sales reps, and they enable your sales reps to devote more of their time to working with fully qualified prospects who are in the later stages of the buying process.

Hiring more sales reps may be necessary to achieve your growth objectives, but take these three steps first to ensure that you?re getting the most out of your existing sales force.

Lakshman Achuthan: Rear-View Mirror - Business Insider

Reader Submission

Earlier this morning, we learned that Q2 GDP growth was actually 1.3 percent, which is much lower than an earlier reading of 1.7 percent growth.

This was largely due to personal consumption, which was revised down.

We also learned that durable goods orders plunged 13 percent in August, which was much worse than the 5.0 percent decline expected.

Excluding transportation, orders fell 1.6 percent.? Economists were looking for a gain of 0.2 percent.

We reached out to ECRI's Lakshman Achuthan, who has been predicting a U.S. economic recession for around a year, despite harsh criticism.

And he only had one thing to say.

"As we recently noted, you'll need to watch the rear-view mirror to see the recession come into focus," he wrote in an email to Business Insider.

Estonia Gets Highest Marks for Internet Freedom - NYTimes.com

What?s up with Estonia? The tiny Baltic nation affords its citizens the greatest measure of digital freedom as measured by Freedom House, a Washington ?advocacy group.

Freedom House?s rankings are based on things like access to the Internet and online free expression laws. Estonia has a national digital identification system, allows its citizens to vote online and has announced plans to teach computer coding to public school students as early as first grade, according to the technology blog?UbuntuLife.

Estonia is a standout at a time when, according to Freedom House, online censorship has grown, from widespread blocking and filtering in some countries to laws that regulate what can be said online to physical attacks on bloggers and other online critics.

The group?s report, which measured the restrictions in 47 countries from January 2011 to May 2012, found that ?restrictions on Internet freedom in many countries have continued to grow, though the methods of control are slowly evolving and becoming less visible.?

The report comes on the heels of a global debate about free expression after a crude video that ridicules Islam was posted on YouTube. It was blamed for setting off violence in several countries worldwide. It led a handful of countries to block YouTube altogether.

In 19 of the 47 countries mentioned in the report, Freedom House said, citizens who posted content online, whether in a blog or on social media, were ?tortured, disappeared, beaten or brutally assaulted.? The report was packed with examples. In Bahrain, for instance, the moderator of an online forum died in police custody in April 2011; in Jordan, a blogger was stabbed in the stomach; and in Sri Lanka and Uzbeskistan, those who criticized the government online have ?disappeared under mysterious circumstances.?

Physical attacks were not limited to critics of the government. Freedom House cited the example of Mexico, where bloggers who had written about organized crime were murdered, with notes that referred explicitly to the victims? postings online.

Eight of the weirdest game controllers of all time ? Video Games ...

Nintendo 64 controller

The Nintendo Wii U controller is definitely unique, but it?s by no means the craziest input device ever made. For as long as people have been gaming, hardware designers have been trying to reinvent the way they do it, and that has produced a long line of strange experiments. Some of them fell flat. Others weren?t great, but innovated in ways that made a lasting impression. A few were even pretty good on their own. No matter how well they succeeded, all of them were unusual enough to earn confused expressions at first glance. Here are some of the most bizarre controllers ever, and why they?ve got a place in gaming history.

NeGcon ? Playstation

The twisting Namco NeGcon controller

The first question most people ask when they see the Namco NeGcon is ?why?? And indeed, why would anyone want a gamepad that twists in half? The surprising answer is that, at the time, it was one of the best ways to play racing games. The original Playstation controller didn?t have the thumbsticks that are so common today, which meant no analog steering. Making a really precise turn required carefully pulsing the left and right directions on a D-pad, or else buying a racing wheel.

The NeGcon?s unusual design offered a different solution. By twisting the halves of Namco?s controller in opposite directions, players could fine tune the amount of turn they wanted. Meanwhile, the two analog buttons on the face, another unusual feature at the time, allowed for more precise acceleration and braking. As strange as it looks now, the NeGcon was a favorite among fans of the early WipEout games.

Nintendo 64 controller

The Nintendo 64 controller (pictured at the top) is perhaps the most refined experiment on this list. In some ways, it was even ahead of its time, as it?s analog thumbstick and trigger didn?t become standard controller features for years. The problem was that, in order to use them, players had to awkwardly grasp the middle and side of the controller, one hand higher than the other. Looking back, it?s clear that this is where Nintendo truly fell in love with making unusual controllers.

Sidewinder Strategic Commander ? PC

Before the Xbox 360 controller became the go-to gaming device on the PC, Microsoft?s Sidewinder gamepad was the gold standard that many games were pre-configured for. The other entries in the Sidewinder family, however, weren?t as universally loved.

The Strategic Commander was designed with RTS games in mind, the idea being that it could replace the keyboard for a player?s left hand. The entire top portion slid around on the base for moving about a map, and twisted for zooming in and out. The buttons under each fingertip could be programmed with long strings of keys for quickly setting up build queues or issuing common commands. Despite some clunkiness to the movement scheme, the Strategic Commander had dedicated fans who felt it was an under-appreciated RTS tool.

Sidewinder Dual Strike ? PC

I can?t bring up the Sidewinder line without mentioning Microsoft?s other strange experiment from that period, the Dual Strike. As with the Strategic Commander, the Dual Strike was an attempt to rethink the usual mouse and keyboard scheme used on the PC, but this time for the FPS genre. The knob that divided the two sides allowed the right section of the controller to pivot around for aiming, while the D-pad handled the ASDW functions of moving and strafing.

Many reviewers found that the Dual Strike actually worked well, even if it took a lot of adjusting to. If the D-pad hadn?t been so prone to break, it might have gathered more of a following.

European lawmakers to question regulators over Libor

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Some of the world's top financial regulators will answer questions in the European Parliament on Monday about market manipulation such as the rigging of benchmark interest rate Libor.

The scandal over fixing the rate used as a reference for financial transactions worth more than $350 trillion globally has led to a fine for Britain's Barclays and prompted an antitrust investigation by the European Commission as well as a pledge to criminalize the fixing of such indexes.

Michel Barnier, the European commissioner in charge of regulation, and Joaquin Almunia, the EU's antitrust chief, will face questions from the parliament's influential economic and monetary affairs committee from 9.00 a.m. EDT on Monday.

Gary Gensler, the chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will testify by videoconference. Masamichi Kono, chairman of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions will also attend.

Barnier has raised the possibility that EU regulators could take over supervising benchmarks such as Libor, breaking with the current system where banks themselves supervise the London-based rate and its continental European equivalent Euribor.

He has already outlined a proposal for criminal penalties for those who rig an index such as the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor), but new rules are not set to take effect until 2015.

"We want to find out how they intend to ensure that the criminal sanctions are sufficient to discourage the manipulation of such indexes," said Sven Giegold, a German member of the European Parliament.

"We want more," he said. "We want to go beyond the limited scope of the Commission's proposal."

Almunia, the European Commissioner leading the antitrust probe, has added to the pressure for reforms to the way benchmark rates are set with his probes into suspected rigging of Libor, Euribor and the Tokyo-baser rate Tibor.

Any banks found guilty of breaching EU antitrust rules could face fines of up to 10 percent of their global revenues. Sources have told Reuters that several lenders are providing information to Almunia's officials in the hope of securing lower penalties.

The Commission has not identified the banks, but sources familiar with the matter have said Deutsche Bank is cooperating with the EU regulator.

Barnier, who oversees European market regulation, is examining how such indexes are compiled.

His concerns are shared by the European Central Bank, which is privately pushing for a rethink on Euribor too, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Libor rates are compiled from estimates by large banks of how much they believe they have to pay to borrow from each other.

But support is growing for changing the calculation to actual lending rates instead of the current system, with regulators worried that the existing set-up allows too much discretion.

Martin Wheatley, Managing Director of UK watchdog, the Financial Services Authority, will announce his recommendations for reforming Libor supervision and governance on Friday.

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Bears got back to winning, and they can thank their defense for that.

Major Wright returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, and Chicago beat the St. Louis Rams 23-6 on Sunday.

The defense came to the rescue against the Rams (1-2), holding them to 160 yards and sacking Sam Bradford six times. That was enough on a day when Jay Cutler struggled, and the Bears (2-1) bounced back after an ugly loss to Green Bay the previous week.

The Bears had just kicked a field goal to extend their lead to 13-6 in the fourth quarter before Wright made his big play. Bradford had been hit hard by Israel Idonije and Stephen Paea on the previous play when Tim Jennings deflected a slant intended for Danny Amendola.

Wright caught the ball at the 45 and ran untouched to the end zone, making it a 14-point game and finally giving the Bears some breathing room.

It wasn't exactly the sort of showing they were looking for after that brutal 23-10 loss to the Packers, but it was good enough.

Cutler at least appeared to keep his composure in this game ? a big improvement after getting sacked seven times, throwing four interceptions and berating and bumping left tackle J'Marcus Webb on the sideline.

Otherwise, there weren't many positives for him.

Cutler completed 17 of 31 passes for 183 yards and was sacked twice and picked off once.

Brandon Marshall had trouble hanging onto the ball at times and wound up with five receptions for 71 yards after catching just two passes the previous week. Michael Bush ran for 55 yards and a touchdown with Matt Forte sidelined by a sprained right ankle.

Israel Idonije had 2? sacks for the Bears. Their strong defensive performance made for a miserable afternoon for Bradford, who was 18 of 35 for 152 yards with two interceptions.

Steven Jackson managed just 29 yards rushing after missing most of the previous game with a groin injury and sitting out practice during the week, and Amendola had five catches for 55 yards after tying a club record with 15 catches for 160 yards.

The Bears had 10 days to prepare for this, but instead of an inspired performance, they got a subpar effort from their offense.

When they had chances, they simply didn't take advantage. With Chicago leading by four early in the final quarter, a 21-yard scramble by Cutler put the ball on the 6. But the Bears settled for a field goal to make it 13-6 after he overthrew an open Devin Hester in the end zone, the ball going through the leaping receiver's hands.

That drew more groans from an already weary crowd.

Chicago's lone touchdown in the first half was aided by a big break, after Darian Stewart got called for roughing the passer on third down at the St. Louis 45. Bush eventually ran it in from the 3 with just under two minutes left to make it 10-0.

The Rams' Greg Zuerlein nailed a 56-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the half and added a 46-yarder midway through the third to make it a four-point game.

Downloadable Tweets coming soon says Twitter CEO

Twitter will soon offer downloadable Tweets, according to the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, who announced the feature would be arriving before the end of the year.

Users have apparently wanted the feature for some time now as it allows for easier lookup and referencing than using the standard Twitter interface.

For a while now a number of tools have been available from third-parties to do this but soon Twitter will be offering an official, and one would hope, easier alternative.

Costolo first mentioned the feature to the New York Times back in July but, reports The Verge, this latest confirmation came while he was speaking at a conference for the Online News Association.

Also mentioned was a new tool that will let third-parties aggregate and publish Tweets as a group, potentially offering users an even more tailored Twitter feed.

Costolo also defended the company's recent API changes which have imposed much stricter limits on what third-party Twitter clients can do with the service, further closing up what was once considered a very open platform. Costolo's defence was that Twitter realised it was basically being used to make money for other company's without seeing anything in return.

Excited by the prospect of being able to download your Tweets or are you a Tweet and forget type? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Army Tankers Wife: New Wellness Center at Carlisle Barracks

In this age of benefit cuts, the Army at Carlisle Barracks will begin offering a new free benefit on Monday to anyone in the midstate with a valid military identification card. Military retirees and their families, National Guard and Reserve members and their families, and Department of Defense civilians all can use the Army Wellness Center, just inside the post?s main entrance off North Hanover Street in Carlisle.? The key word is Wellness.

??????

??????

The Army is embracing the same concept of wellness to prevent disease ? and cut costs ? that the corporate world and other parts of government have been on to for years now, said Col. Stephanie Wilcher, director of the Dunham Army Health Clinic at Carlisle Barracks. But instead of limiting the center to the active Army soldiers who live on the post and their families, the Army is taking the big-tent approach.
The midstate has a boatload of people who carry some form of military ID, besides those on active duty.
Barracks and U.S. Army War College spokeswoman Carol Kerr said an estimated 51,000 military retirees live in Pennsylvania. Several thousands call the midstate home and already depend on the post to buy their food at the commissary and everything else at the Post Exchange.

Now, the wellness center will give them more reasons to come, such as biofeedback, stress reduction and learning how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep the pounds off by eating and exercising right.
Wilcher said folks don?t already have to be enrolled in the military?s health care system ? known as Tricare ? or be registered with the Veterans Administration to use the center. All they need is that military ID card, and an appointment. The center won?t accept walk-ins.

Carlisle Barracks is just the third Army post in the country to get a wellness center, after Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Hood, Texas, where the centers opened in 2011. Center Director Cory Erhard, one of six civilians staffing the North Middleton Twp. center, said the Army plans to eventually locate wellness centers on all major active Army installations nationwide, including Fort Meade, Md. The goal is a consistent standard of wellness no matter where a soldier and his or her family is stationed, he said. The center?s outreach will extend beyond serving the ID-card carrying community outside the post. Erhard said a mobile version of the center will offer screenings and services to students at Cumberland-Perry Vocational Technical School. The school was chosen because it takes in students from a cross-section of area school districts.? Kerr said the Army picked Carlisle Barracks to be among the first posts to get a center because the Army?s future leaders are here, referring to the U.S. Army War College students who spend a year at Carlisle Barracks to prepare for assignments higher up the Pentagon ladder.

The center is a welcomed addition, in contrast to the threat the barracks and the Army War College have been living under for the past few years due to Pentagon budget cuts.? The Army Physical Fitness Institute ? similar in concept to the wellness center but not open to people outside the post ? was eliminated and three other institutes downsized. Pentagon budget-cutters proposed closing the Army Heritage and Education Center and moving it to the Washington, D.C., area, but that plan appears to have been abandoned for now and center funding remains intact. ?It?s definitely an investment in the Army War College and Carlisle Barracks,? Kerr said of the center. ?I think our future looks bright.?

Walking to the beat could help patients with Parkinson's disease

Friday, September 21, 2012

Walking to a beat could be useful for patients needing rehabilitation, according to a University of Pittsburgh study. The findings, highlighted in the August issue of PLOS One, demonstrate that researchers should further investigate the potential of auditory, visual, and tactile cues in the rehabilitation of patients suffering from illnesses like Parkinson's Disease?a brain disorder leading to shaking (tremors) and difficulty walking.

Together with a team of collaborators from abroad, Ervin Sejdic, an assistant professor of engineering in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, studied the effects of various metronomic stimuli (a mechanically produced beat) on fifteen healthy adults, ages 18 to 30. Walkers participated in two sessions consisting of five 15-minute trials in which the participants walked with different cues.

In the first, participants walked at their preferred walking speed. Then, in subsequent trials, participants were asked to walk to a metronomic beat, produced by way of visuals, sound, or touch. Finally, participants were asked to walk with all three cues simultaneously, the pace of which was set to that of the first trial.

"We found that the auditory cue had the greatest influence on human gait, while the visual cues had no significant effect whatsoever," said Sejdic. "This finding could be particularly helpful for patients with Parkinson's Disease, for example, as auditory cues work very well in their rehabilitation."

Sejdic said that with illnesses like Parkinson's Disease, a big question is whether researchers can better understand the changes that come with this deterioration. Through their study, the Pitt team feels that visual cues could be considered as an alternative modality in rehabilitation and should be further explored in the laboratory.

"Oftentimes, a patient with Parkinson's Disease comes in for an exam, completes a gait assessment in the laboratory, and everything is great," said Sejdic. "But then, the person leaves and falls down. Why? Because a laboratory is a strictly controlled environment. It's flat, has few obstacles, and there aren't any cues (like sound) around us. When we're walking around our neighborhoods, however, there are sidewalks, as well as streetlights and people honking car horns: you have to process all of this information together. We are trying to create that real-life space in the laboratory."

In the future, Sejdic and his team would like to conduct similar walking trials with patients with Parkinson's Disease, to observe whether their gait is more or less stable.

"Can we see the same trends that we observed in healthy people?" he said. "And, if we observe the same trends, then that would have direct connotations to rehabilitation processes."

Additionally, his team plans to explore the impact of music on runners and walkers.

Poet performs spoken word on Ithaca College campus | The Ithacan

Thomas Sayers Ellis, poet and assistant professor of creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College, read at Ithaca College on Wednesday as part of the Department of Writing?s Distinguished Visiting Writers Series.

Ellis, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., is the author of two full-length poetry collections, ? The Maverick Room? and ?Skin, INC.: Identity Repair Poems,? as well as other poetry chaplets such as ?The Genuine Negro Hero? and ?Song On: A Chaplet of 6 Poems.?

During his visit to the college, Ellis taught a writing master class to interested students in the writing department and performed selected pieces in Clark Lounge. Ellis was selected as one of three visiting writers to speak to students through performances and writing master classes.

Catherine Taylor, associate professor of writing and director of the Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, chooses speakers for the series by collaborating with other faculty members in the Department of Writing.

?We have conversations about who we?d like to see and try to get a broad range of speakers,? Taylor said. ?We have six speakers each year, so we always have a poet, a fiction writer and a nonfiction writer each semester to get a range of voices.?

During the master class, Ellis exposed students to new perspectives on spoken word poetry.

?I was talking about failure and passion within failure,? Ellis said. ??I think about poems on the page as exhaustive. We keep moving through the breathing and interrupting the breathing with the technical stuff they teach you and you unteach yourself.?

Ellis began his poetry reading from his collections ?The Maverick Room? ?and ?Skin INC: Identity Repair Poems.?

During the reading, Ellis performed sections from the 15-part ?Gone Pop,? a critical homage to Michael Jackson, and ?The Obama Hour,? which examines America?s relation with race and color.

Ellis encouraged audience interaction and gave conversational-style transitions and background information before each poem. He also incorporated musical beats into his poetry when he recreated Michael Jackson?s ?Billie Jean? in ?Gone Pop.?

?Michael used to refer to that [beat] as the ?jelly,?? said Ellis. ?So whenever he wanted to work on that song, he?d speak into the mic: ?Give me the jelly.??

After his performance, Ellis was met with a crowd for his book signing.

Sophomore Dorothea Hinman, a student in an Introduction to Poetry class, said she found the spoken word performance entertaining.

?Not only was he eloquent, he was funny,? Hinman said. ?He tackled deep issues like race, but threw in witty wordplay.?

After Ellis?s performance, Hinman said she was eager to learn more about spoken word poetry.

Junior Garen Whitmore, a member of the college?s slam poetry club Spit That, found Ellis to be an inspiration.

?He really opened things up,? said Whitmore. ?He gave me ideas for things that I could do with spoken word.?

Ellis also lived up to Taylor?s expectations in choosing a diverse speaker.

?His performance was so dynamic and exciting,? said Taylor. ?I have a great job because every now and then I get to choose someone who I really love.?

Are You For or Against Sleeping in Separate Bedrooms | Black and ...

Last winter, my job sent me to a conference for a week in Boston. And while I missed my guy, I got better sleep over those four nights than I?ve gotten in the last six years.

My husband is a snorer. And when I say he?s a snorer, I mean that when we lived in a townhouse I could tell that he had fallen asleep on the couch as I walked up to the door because I could hear him snoring outside. It?s a problem. A real one. But I didn?t realize how much sleeping next to a chainsaw was affecting my sleep because I had gotten so used to it.

On top of him being a snorer, he?s also a mover. I can?t count the number of elbows I?ve taken to my head and neck. He manages to ruin the covers in ways that I didn?t think possible. Just last night I woke up in the middle of the night because he had somehow flipped the comforter completely over to the scratchy side. How does that happen? The flat sheet? Couldn?t even find it.

Before I got married, I remember an older coworker of mine who had been married for 30+ years saying that at some point she and her husband had toyed with the idea of separate bedrooms. Newly-engaged, I couldn?t even fathom not wanting to spend every night side by side. These days, while I think that I would still want to share a bed with him most of the time, ?it would be nice to know that I had options if a sound sleep was one of my goals.

At the same time, the bed at the end of the day is somewhere that we can unwind with each other and just be close if we hadn?t had the opportunity all day long. I wouldn?t want sleeping apart to affect our intimacy.

At present, we don?t have an extra bedroom, so it really is a non-issue and something I toss around in my mind when he?s snoring. ?I?m thinking: ?If I could just kill you for like 15 minutes while I fall asleep? (I?m sorry, these are thoughts of the sleep deprived). But if we ever go for a home upgrade, I can?t say that I wouldn?t be tempted.

What do you think? Is having separate bedrooms wrong or sometimes a necessary evil? How do you deal with sleep differences between you and your spouse?

Re-connect with your spouse and build a stronger marriage in 15 minutes a day at Making Love in the Microwave.

Romney releasing 2011 tax return, paid IRS 14.1 percent

Mitt Romney arrives in Las Vegas, Nevada September 21, 2012. (Brian Snyder/Reuters)

Looking to blunt relentless Democratic attacks, Mitt Romney is to release on Friday his 2011 tax return, a summary of his effective tax rates for the past two decades and, for good measure, two doctors' notes attesting to the good physical health of the candidate and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

The tax return was to be released at 3 p.m. Eastern time on the website www.mittromney.com/disclosure. Ahead of the release, the former Massachusetts governor's campaign released a blog post summarizing the document.

Releasing information on a Friday afternoon is traditionally a way to reduce the amount of media exposure.

The move fulfills a promise Romney made earlier in the 2012 presidential campaign. But it was unlikely to quiet Democratic criticisms that Romney has failed to live up to a standard set by his father, former Michigan Governor George Romney, who released 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 1968.

The Romneys paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 of mostly investment income for an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent. (The Obamas paid an effective tax rate of 20.5 percent in 2011, a lower rate than the president's secretary, according to the White House.) ?

Romney, who is thought to have a personal fortune in the neighborhood of $250 million, gave $4,020,772 to charity, 30 percent of their income. (The Obamas gave 21.8 percent of their income to charities).

The blog post, written by the manager of Romney's blind trust since 2003, R. Bradford Malt, said the Romneys had filed their 2011 tax return with the IRS Friday morning. It also indicated that the Romneys' tax preparer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, would provide a letter summarizing the tax rates that the Romneys paid from 1990 to 2009.

The Romneys paid an average annual effective federal tax rate of 20.2 percent, with the lowest rate coming in at 13.66 percent. Over that same stretch of time, they gave an average of 13.45 percent of their adjusted gross income to charity.

"During the 20-year period covered by the PWC letter, Gov. and Mrs. Romney paid 100 percent of the taxes that they owed," the blog post read.

Democrats led by the Obama campaign have repeatedly hit Romney over his refusal to disclose his tax returns?a fight that has helped to keep Romney's vast wealth in the media spotlight at a time when the president is trying to paint him as an out-of-touch millionaire bent on helping the wealthy.

HP unveils first NFC-enabled mouse, various other PC accessories

HP unveils first NFCenabled mouse, various other PC accessories

In addition to unveiling all those laptops, HP just announced a boatload of peripherals. Of the bunch, the most compelling might be the NFC-enabled Touch to Pair Mouse, which, as the name suggests, can be paired with another device simply through tapping. (Good thing lots of computers currently have NFC, right?) If, by chance, you don't have NFC on your laptop -- and you probably don't -- the mouse will function just fine as a regular old Bluetooth device. Look for it in November for $39. Elsewhere on the wireless mouse front, HP announced the X6000 (pictured), which has four-way tilt scrolling and can be used on most surfaces, including glass. That arrives this month for $59. Finally, if your tastes are a bit simpler, there's also the Wireless Mouse X4500 and X5500, which will be available this month for $29 and $39, respectively.

Beyond mice, HP also trotted out the $29 Wireless Classic Desktop keyboard, along with the $49 Wireless Elite v2. For audio lovers, there's the HP Portable Bluetooth Speaker, which will go on sale next month for a cool $79. Eighty bucks (or thereabouts) will also get you a 90W universal power adapter that claims to be compatible with most notebooks. It also has a built-in USB port, allowing you to charge a mobile device at the same time. Rounding out the list is the Webcam HD 4310, an $89 shooter capable of 1080p video, autofocus, autoexposure and three-way video calling. All that in more digestible form in the PR after the break.

Samsung ad: Apple makes 'the coolest adapters'

10 hrs.

Last year's iPhone launch brought an unexpected pleasure: some funny and understated ads from Samsung mocking Apple's dedicated fans for coveting features already available elsewhere. And now, just a week after the announcement of the iPhone 5, they've done it again.

It's light, good-natured humor, but it does hit a few tender spots. "I heard you have to have an adapter to use the dock on this one," says one person in the usual line waiting for the new iPhone. "Yeah, but they make?the coolest adapters," is the response.

Others like the 4G, larger 4-inch screen and other capabilities that Samsung's Galaxy S III users are quick to point out have been available for awhile on Android. Samsung wisely stays away from making outright jabs; the iPhone 5?is, after all, being received well and few would say it's poorly designed.

Perhaps the finest moment: One Samsung user is holding a place in the iPhone line for someone ? and to the horror of the cool kids waiting beside him, it turns out to be his parents. The looks on their faces suggest it may be time to reevaluate their hipness quotient.

Whether you're an iPhone or Android fan, it's a fun watch.?Check out "The Next Big Thing is Already Here" below:

Some 800 union delegates representing the 29,000 teachers and support staff in Chicago?Public Schools voted overwhelmingly to resume classes on Wednesday after more than two hours of debate.

"I am so thrilled that people are going back," Chicago?Teachers Union President?Karen Lewis?said. "Everybody is looking forward to seeing their kids tomorrow."

Lewis, an outspoken former high school chemistry teacher, said the entire membership of the union will cast a formal vote in the next two weeks to ratify a new contract agreement.

The delegates ended the strike?on their second attempt, having decided on Sunday to continue the walkout for two more days so they could review details of a proposed three-year contract with Emanuel.

Emanuel had to retreat from a proposal to introduce merit pay for teachers and he promised teachers that at least half of all new hires in the district would be from union members laid off by the closing of schools.

Speaking at Walter Payton College Prep school in Chicago?after the vote, Emanuel said he was pleased by the outcome.

"This settlement is an honest compromise," he said. "It means a new day and a new direction for Chicago?public schools."

Lewis led the walkout on Sept. 10, the first Chicago?teachers' strike?in 25 years, to protest Emanuel's demand for sweeping education reforms. Some 350,000?public school?students were affected by the largest U.S. labor dispute in a year.

Emanuel on Monday tried to get a court order ending the strike, angering the union. A court hearing on his request is scheduled for Wednesday.

US labor movement galvanized?

The strike?focused attention on a national debate over how to improve failing schools. Emanuel, backed by a powerful reform movement, believes poorly performing schools should be closed and reopened with new staff or converted to "charter" schools that often are non-union and run by private groups.

Teachers want more resources put into neighborhood public schools to help them succeed. Chicago?teachers say many of their students live in poor and crime-ridden areas and this affects their learning. More than 80 percent of?public school?students qualify for free meals based on low family incomes.

Only about 60 percent of Chicago?students graduate from high school, far below the national average of 75 percent and more than 90 percent in some affluent Chicago?suburbs.

The decision by the union to walk out of classrooms eight days ago rather than accept Emanuel's reforms galvanized the weakened U.S. labor movement after a string of national defeats.
