PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea declared Kim Jong Il's son and successor "supreme leader" of the ruling party, military and the people during a memorial Thursday for his father in the government's first public endorsement of his leadership.
Kim Jong Un ? head bowed and somber in a dark overcoat ? stood watching from a balcony at the Grand People's Study House overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, flanked by the top party and military officials. Also on the balcony was Kim Jong Il's younger sister, Kim Kyong Hui, who is expected to play a guardian role for her young nephew.
Given Kim Jong Un's inexperience and age ? he is in his late 20s ? there are questions outside North Korea about whether he is equipped to lead a nation engaged in sensitive negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.
But support among North Korea's power brokers was unequivocal at the memorial service, attended by hundreds of thousands of people filling Kim Il Sung Square and other plazas in central Pyongyang.
"The fact that he completely resolved the succession matter is Great Comrade Kim Jong Il's most noble achievement," Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, told the massive audience at the Kim Il Sung Square.
"Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un is our party, military and country's supreme leader who inherits great comrade Kim Jong Il's ideology, leadership, character, virtues, grit and courage," said Kim, considered North Korea's ceremonial head of state.
Life in Pyongyang came to a standstill as mourners packed the plaza from the Grand People's Study to the Taedong River for the second day of funeral ceremonies for the late leader.
Kim Jong Il, who led his 24 million people with absolute power for 17 years, died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69, according to state media. He inherited power from his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, who died of a heart attack in 1994, in what was the communist world's first hereditary succession.
Attention turned to Kim Jong Un after he was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons to carry the Kim dynasty into a third generation.
The process to groom him was rushed compared to the 20 years Kim Jong Il had to prepare to take over from his father, and relied heavily on Kim family legacy as guerrilla fighters and the nation's founders.
Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general last year and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party. Since his father's death, state media have bestowed on him a series of new titles signifying that his succession campaign was gaining momentum: Great Successor, Supreme Leader and Sagacious Leader.
Kim Jong Un's leadership is not expected to become formal until top party, parliamentary and government representatives convene to confirm his ascension.
He is expected to formally assume command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and become general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.
In a speech during the memorial, Gen. Kim Jong Gak, a top political officer in the Korean People's Army, said the military will dedicate itself to protecting Kim Jong Un, calling him the "supreme leader of our revolutionary armed forces."
This week's events have been watched closely for clues to who in the military and Workers' Party will form Kim's inner circle of trusted aides during the sensitive transition to leadership.
During the mourning period, Kim made at least five visits to his father's begonia-bedecked bier when the late leader was lying in state at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, accompanied at times by the old guard that is expected to support him.
At Wednesday's funeral procession, he was accompanied by Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, who has family ties to the military and is expected to be crucial in giving his nephew guidance.
On Thursday, North Koreans packed the main square as well as the plaza in front of a Workers' Party monument of a hammer, sickle and writing brush.
They bowed their heads as eight artillery guns fired; military officers removed their hats while the booms resonated across the square.
North Korea's senior officials, including Kim Jong Il's sister, Kim Kyong Hui, stood in silence on the platform during the gun salute.
Workers, citizens, children and soldiers across the country then bowed for three minutes of tribute to Kim Jong Il as trains and boats blew their sirens.
State TV showed people lined up neatly in rows, or outside their places of work, on sidewalks, in squares, beneath giant portraits of Kim Jong Il.
His two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at either the funeral or memorial.

The industrial plant that houses the Triad Group of Hartland, Wis., is for sale for $14.2 million, real estate listings show. The company was closed after problems with contamination and sterility in medical wipes and other products.
By JoNel Aleccia
Federal health officials have given a green light for a first step toward reopening for a Wisconsin business shut down after making and distributing contaminated medical wipes blamed for illnesses and deaths nationwide.
Food and Drug Administration officials on Wednesday said they?ve approved a so-called ?reconditioning plan? submitted by H&P Industries and the Triad Group of Hartland, Wis. The plan, required under terms of a June court order, stipulates how the sister firms will be allowed to rework more than $6 million of seized medical supplies so that they?re safe for use?-- or destroy products that can?t be repaired.
But the public won?t be allowed to know exactly how the firms intend to fix the problems with products distributed to hospitals, clinics, stores and homes in the U.S. and around the world, the FDA has ruled.
The agency has denied an msnbc.com public records request for copies of two reconditioning plans submitted by the firms. In a letter, officials said release of the documents would disclose trade secrets and confidential commercial information and could interfere with law enforcement proceedings.
The approval of the reconditioning proposal comes a year this month after the death of a 2-year-old Houston boy, Harrison Kothari, from an infection caused by the same bacterium detected in alcohol prep wipes made and distributed by H&P Industries and the Triad Group.? At least 11 deaths, including Harry?s, have been tied to alcohol prep wipes, including those made by the Wisconsin firms, FDA records show.
The plan approval also comes nearly a year since those firms launched a global recall of tens of millions of wipes, swabs and other products at the FDA?s urging because of potential contamination with Bacillus cereus bacteria and other organisms.
For Shanoop and Sandra Kothari, parents of the Houston toddler, it makes a difficult anniversary even tougher.
?You?ve got something hanging over you that?s not anything but a constant reminder of the loss,? said Jim Perdue, the Texas lawyer representing the Kotharis in a lawsuit filed in February.
Harrison Kothari, 2, died Dec. 1, 2010, after contracting a meningitis infection caused by Bacillus cereus. His parents blame tainted Triad wipes for the death.
H&P Industries officials and lawyers did not respond to msnbc.com requests for comment about the company?s future plans. Nor would they comment on industrial real estate listings that show that the firm?s 285,000-square-foot plant at 700 W. North Shore Drive in Hartland is for sale for $14.2 million. A representative for The Dickman Company Inc. on Wednesday?said the site was an active listing.
The FDA has a mixed record with enforcing good practices at the Wisconsin medical supply plant and other manufacturers of medical wipes. Records obtained by msnbc.com showed officials failed to issue warning letters or demand other sanctions despite documented problems with sterilization and contamination dating back to 2009, and nearly a?decade earlier. When officials finally did investigate, they demanded seizure of more than $6 million in H&P Industries products and, later, the plant closure.
H&P Industries was only the first medical supply firm to recall potentially tainted products this year. In September, Professional Disposables International Inc., or PDI, of Orangeburg, N.Y. voluntarily recalled all lots of five different kinds of non-sterile alcohol prep padsbecause of potential contamination with Bacillus cereus.
In April, Rockline Industries of Springdale, Ark., recalled nearly a million units of baby wipes, including brands sent to Walmart and Winn Dixie Stores because of potential contamination with?Enterobacter gergoviae, a bacterium that can cause serious infections in babies and people with compromised immune systems. As first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Rockline Industries had similar trouble with contamination dating back to 2006, but the FDA took no enforcement action.
The FDA?s crackdown on H&P Industries and the Triad Group came only after msnbc.com reports sparked the interest of Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who demanded explanations from the FDA after residents of their states said they were sickened by bacterial contamination from alcohol prep wipes, swabs and other products recalled by the Wisconsin firms.?
Under terms of the consent decree agreed to by H&P Industries and the FDA, the reconditioning plans are supposed to describe specific steps for correcting bacterial contamination and other violations.
The family-owned firms, run by brothers David R. Haertle and Eric C. Haertle and their sister, Donna L. Petroff, were shuttered in June after world-wide recalls of alcohol wipes and swabs and povidone iodine products found to be potentially contaminated with dangerous bacteria, including Bacillus cereus.
The consent decree lays out specific steps the company must follow in order to resume operations, including revamped quality assurance steps and new management to oversee it. ?If the firms fail to comply, the company and its individual officers can face steep fines and other sanctions. But it doesn?t reveal how the company plans to meet those demands.
The firms face at least 10 lawsuits in several states filed by families who claim contaminated alcohol pads led to serious infections and, in at least three cases, deaths. The Kotharis were the first to seek legal action.
Other alleged deaths include a ?69-year-old Alabama woman, Ruby Hutcheson, who died in August days before she was scheduled to give a deposition in her suit against H&P Industries. The family of a 66-year-old Illinois man, Garry Rockett, also claimed in a July lawsuit that he died in 2009 after being treated for cancer using contaminated Triad wipes.
The latest lawsuit was filed in November by a 57-year-old Washington, D.C., multiple sclerosis patient who said he developed a Bacillus cereus infection after using tainted wipes made by H&P Industries and the Triad Group and supplied by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. William Preston West Jr. is seeking $10 million in compensatory and punitive damages; his wife, Carolyn B. Gleason, is seeking $1 million.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? Oxidative stress damages DNA. Researchers in the Vetsuisse Faculty have now decoded the mechanism that repairs DNA damaged in this way. This repair mechanism could lead to less invasive approaches in cancer therapy and contribute to the development of new tests for the early diagnosis of cancer.
Oxidative stress is the cause of many serious diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis and diabetes. It occurs when the body is exposed to excessive amounts of electrically charged, aggressive oxygen compounds. These are normally produced during breathing and other metabolic processes, but also in the case of ongoing stress, exposure to UV light or X-rays. If the oxidative stress is too high, it overwhelms the body's natural defences. The aggressive oxygen compounds destroy genetic material, resulting in what are referred to as harmful 8-oxo-guanine base mutations in the DNA.
DNA repair mechanism decoded
Together with the University of Oxford, Enni Markkanen, a veterinarian in the working group of Prof. Ulrich H?bscher from the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Zurich has decoded and characterized the repair mechanism for the mutated DNA bases. This mechanism efficiently copies thousands of 8-oxo-guanines without their harmful mutations, thus normally preventing the negative consequences of 8-oxo-guanine damage. In their study, published in "PNAS," the researchers outline the detailed processes involved in the local and temporal coordination of this repair mechanism. Prof. Ulrich H?bscher hopes that this basic research can be used therapeutically.
"We expect that the DNA repair mechanism discovered here will lead to less invasive approaches in cancer therapy and that it will be possible to develop new clinical tests for the early detection of certain types of cancer." In cooperation with University Hospital Zurich, a study is already underway that involves examining samples of different types of cancer for the repair gene and its regulation.

Former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson is never one to hide her staunchly conservative political views. Her latest rant surrounds Muslim infiltration of the U.S.
Jackson, on her web talk show this week, claimed the United States is being overtaken by radical Muslims bent on bringing the nation under Sharia law.
Seriously. Citing insider knowledge, she said the following:
"I just went to a briefing in Washington DC, across the street from the Capitol, at the Longworth building at 8:30 am two days ago and it changed my life."
"For six hours, I saw pictures and names and dates and facts and Islamic law books and Korans, Surahs for six hours and they proved to me that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated our highest positions in government and this is serious."
"Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are the only GOP candidates to acknowledge the above facts and warn against the present threat of Islamic Law replacing the U.S. Constitution. Very few people in America are informed and educated as I am."
There you have it folks. "Few people are as informed and educated" as Victoria Jackson.
Perhaps she means that ironically, as in she is so ridiculously misinformed, paranoid and uneducated that few people could ever stoop to her level.
Eh, probably not. She also thinks Glee makes kids gay. But we need to subscribe to her Podcast for the unintentional comedy factor alone.

Holloway, who was being treated for stomach cancer in Texas, died Saturday afternoon, said Currie Ballard, former university historian in residence. He was 81.
Holloway worked for 40 years of service to Langston, a historically black university, where he rose from assistant registrar to become the 14th president in 1979.
Before becoming president, Holloway had served as the school's registrar, a professor, vice president of administration and dean of student affairs. Holloway also was a student at Langston.
Holloway was inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2002 he was presented with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Education Leadership Award, which recognized Holloway as a leader in education.
Before he took over as president, the university had five presidents in less than 10 years and during that time there was talk of closing the school. Holloway brought stability to Lang-ston, which was created in 1897 as the Colored Agricultural and Normal University. It was the first and only state college to be designated by race.
"If he had stumbled as president of Langston, there wouldn't be Lang-ston as we know it," Ballard said.
"He's the only person I've ever known in a high position of authority to have an open-door policy. If you were an alumnus, he had the same policy at his home," he said.
"He was just an extraordinary personality and leader," former Gov. David Walters said Saturday. "I really enjoyed working with him while I was in office."
Walters, who served as governor from 1991-95, said he enjoyed Holloway's good-natured lobbying "for all things Langston."
Walters recalled that during one of the commencement speeches he gave at Langston it seemed especially warm inside.
"I couldn't help but think Ernest may have actually turned the heat up in the gymnasium which he was lobbying to try to get us to air condition," Walters said. "We were all sweating so profusely. We found a way to get the gymnasium air-conditioned shortly thereafter. He kidded about the heat, of course, but made his point."
Holloway also worked to improve Oklahoma 33 between Guthrie and Coyle, including a span that runs north of Langston University, which is named the Dr. Ernest L. Holloway Highway.
Holloway and others complained that the former two-lane highway from Guthrie to Coyle was unsafe, putting Langston students and their families at risk. Walters said work on getting money for the improvements started under his administration; funding came during the administration of his successor, Frank Keating.
"That created a new front door for Langston University," Walters said. "It changed the complexion of the campus and made it a lot safer place for the kids to get back and forth to. That was a big deal for Ernest to finally get that done."
Rep. Mike Shelton, a 1996 graduate of Langston, worked for a year in Holloway's office while a student.
"He was the biggest advocate Langston had," said Shelton, D-Oklahoma City. "He truly bled orange and blue. He understands the time to fight and he understands the time for compromise and he would never put Langton second to any university in the state of Oklahoma."
Holloway is survived by sons Ernest Holloway Jr., of Beaumont, Texas, Norman Holloway, of Kansas City, Mo., and Reginald Holloway, of Richmond, Texas, as well as several grandchildren.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Political Notes is a weekly compilation of political news items.
Military members will be able to stay in hotels for free as part of a new Hotels for Heroes program.
Congress passed a law last week, co-sponsored by Maryland Democrats U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and Sen. Ben Cardin, that allows people to donate hotel reward points to members of the military. The bill, which will benefit troops receiving care through the military health system and their families, was included in the National Defense Authorization Act that passed by a vote of 283 - 136 in the House and 86-13 in the Senate.
"The love and support of family is often the best medicine to help a wounded warrior recover from his or her injuries," Ruppersberger said in a statement. "Military families are already facing enormous challenges and should not ever have to worry about how they will afford travel expenses."
Hotels for Heroes is an expansion of the national Hero Miles program that provides free round-trip airfare to wounded warriors recovering at military medical centers, as well as to friends and family visiting them. Flights under the program, created by Ruppersberger in 2003, are made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by airline passengers.
The program is administered by the Fisher House, a nonprofit organization that opens its homes to military families visiting loved ones at hospitals across the country. Fisher House recently announced it had issued 25,000 tickets over the years.
The 33rd District Democratic Club won't meet this month.
The group's next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Perry's Restaurant, 1210 Annapolis Road, Odenton. The speaker will be U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards, representative of the 4th Congressional District.
The club will also hold elections at the meeting. For more information, visit www.33dems.org.
A Severna Park man running for U.S. Senate has garnered another local endorsement.
Sen. Ed Reilly, R-Crofton, has endorsed former U.S. Secret Service agent Dan Bongino.
Reilly, the state Senate's minority whip, said Bongino can relate to the "average Marylander."
"Dan understands the difficult choices we face in this weak economy," Reilly said in a statement. "His candidacy gives us a chance to turn the page and send someone to Washington who has actually lived a life similar to those he'd be elected to represent."
Bongino, 36, served in the Secret Service for more than a decade in the Presidential Protection Division. An entrepreneur, Bongino has graduate degrees in business administration and psychology.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio ? Told that his unborn son had only half a heart and little chance to survive, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Sanctus Real began pouring his fears and doubts into music.
The songs were meant to comfort his family while they searched for answers and sought to understand God's role during the months before and after the baby's birth that were filled with surgeries and life-threatening complications.
It didn't take long for him to realize that his words needed to be shared so that others struggling with life would know they're not alone.
What came out of the heartache was "Every Falling Tear," a solo album that's meant to touch and console during the hardest of times.
"People want to know that their pain has a purpose," said Matt Hammitt, one of the founding members of Sanctus Real, a band with two Grammy-nominated albums since 2008.
"That's the biggest part of sharing our story," he said. "That there is a purpose."
Hammitt and his wife, Sarah, knew something was wrong minutes after finding out during an ultrasound in April 2010 that their third child would be a boy, following two girls. They saw the sorrow on their doctor's face even before she spoke.
Doctors later confirmed the baby had a rare congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which causes the left side of the heart to be severely underdeveloped. For five months, the couple contemplated all of the possible procedures and treatments while weighing the odds of what could go wrong.
Their baby would face multiple surgeries and an uncertain future at best.
They also didn't know how to deal with a flood of emotions ? the anger, the doubt, the feeling of being alone. Hammitt, 32, decided he needed to tell God how he was feeling, so he started writing songs about their journey.
"I began writing about all that I was learning about struggle and faith," he said.
Each song tells of a moment or a series of events leading to the baby's birth ? there's a father's fear of holding back his love for a son he may never know and a mother's hope of finding peace in the midst of despair.
"I wanted to write songs that would speak him someday about how much his father loved him no matter how long or short his life would be," Hammitt said, his voice trailing off.
The album released in September was his first solo work. On tour during the fall with the band, he included the song "All of Me" in their sets. It starts: "Afraid to love, something that could break. Could I move on if you were torn away?"
Hammitt was a high school sophomore when he and guitarist Chris Rohman and drummer Mark Graalman started the band 15 years ago. They've stayed together, playing in coffee shops, churches and now arenas.
Sanctus Real will be one of nearly a dozen Christian artists taking part in the Winter Jam tour that starts in January, with stops in 47 cities.
The song from "Every Falling Tear" that means the most to Hammitt is "Trust," a worship song that reminds people not to lose faith "even in the darkness, even in the questions, even when the hardest times of life are at hand."
The lyrics were born out of a time when Hammitt was feeling isolated and alone.
"Sometimes we need to be reminded of the truth," he said. "And for me, the truth is that I trust God."
Bowen Matthew Hammitt was born on Sept. 9, 2010. His first open heart surgery came four days later and the next night he went into cardiac arrest. A team of doctors and nurses spent an hour performing CPR until they were able to revive him and get him on life support.
Complications and a stroke kept him in the hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., for just over two months.
While there, the couple played demos of the songs Hammitt had written "so Bowen could hear his dad's voice," his wife said. Night-shift nurses often turned up the music when most families would leave for the evening.
"They felt it was good for all the babies to be soothed," Sarah said. "We'd come back in the morning and it'd be really loud."
Hammitt recorded the songs for the album soon after the family brought Bowen home to suburban Toledo. His only unease was that they might be critiqued like any other work.
"Originally I just wanted them recorded for us at the hospital," he said. "I realized they're meant to comfort other people too."
So far, the response has been what he hoped for. They've even received notes from parents who've played the songs at their children's funerals.
Now, the Hammitts want to take their work a step further by starting the Whole Hearts Foundation, a source of financial, emotional and spiritual help for families with children suffering from congenital heart defects. They see the foundation becoming their life's work.
"It's amazing to see even beyond the album what's come out of this," Hammitt said. "We had a vision in the hospital, how can we help other families, let them know they're not alone."
Bowen, who turned 1 in September, faces one more surgery now slated for 2013 to repair his heart. Eventually, he'll likely need a new heart before he reaches middle age.
He's growing, but not as fast as doctors would like. Sarah watches him closely for any signs of heart failure. He only has a single ventricle pumping oxygen to his body and lungs so she looks to see if he sweats when he eats or if his skin turns blue or red.
When Matt brought him downstairs after a nap, a look of worry crossed her face when she saw that his hair was matted with sweat. But it turned out there was no cause for concern.
"We know at any moment things could change even though he's stable now," Sarah said. "It's ultimately God's will."

There are many levels of celebrity status for athletes, ranging from the 'even your mother knows who they are' names such as Barry Bonds and Derek Jeter, all the way down to those that are only considered big-time to the community they hail from.
Where Shelley Duncan falls is a matter of debate. But regardless, the former Canyon del Oro High School and University of Arizona baseball star is back in town and looking to raise money for local charities.
The avenue for this effort is through a poker tournament, the Duncan's Celebrity Poker Classic, scheduled for the evening of Jan. 7 at Casino del Sol. Cards are in the air at 7 p.m.
The buy-in is $299, of which $150 goes to the prize pool. That's a pretty huge piece taken out of the entry, but that's because $50 goes to the Tucson Youth Baseball Association and another $69 gets you a "promotional package" that includes vouchers for a room at Del Sol's new hotel ? which is pretty dang nice, just for the record ? and a trip to the casino's Festa buffet.
Another $30 goes to the house.
The tournament is open to the first 130 people, with 10 to 20 entrants getting a piece of the prize pool. Some rebuys and add-ons are available, though it's not clear if that money will go to the prize pool or not.
It is expected other local "celebrities" will participate in the tournament, but at this point Del Sol's poker management couldn't confirm anyone beyond Duncan, who has had a semi-productive pro baseball career with stints on the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians.

Some say imitation is the highest form of flattery. If that is actually true, then "Saturday Night Live" loves TODAY's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. During last weekend's episode, the show poked fun at the ladies of the fourth hour and Hoda's "imaginary boyfriend" durring a reccuring sketch.

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich overlooked a couple of years of red ink when he asserted Thursday night that he balanced the budget for four years as House speaker. And in claiming sole credit for the achievement, he glossed over the fact that budgets are not a one-man show: There was a Democratic president in town, too.
In the last debate before the leadoff Iowa Republican presidential caucuses, Gingrich persisted in repeating a claim he has made often in the campaign, sometimes more accurately than others. Here and there, other candidates, too, reprised misstatements or partial truths from the string of debates and from the stump. Mitt Romney once again declared he has spent his life in the private sector, ignoring his years as governor and political candidate.
A look at some of the claims in the debate and how they compare with the facts:
GINGRICH: "I balanced the budget for four straight years, paid off $405 billion in debt ? pretty conservative."
THE FACTS: In the 1996 and 1997 budget years, the first two years he served as speaker of the House of Representatives, the government actually ran deficits. In 1998 and 1999, the government ran surpluses. Two more years of surpluses followed, but Gingrich was gone from politics by then and had nothing to do with them.
Moreover, the national debt went up during the four years Gingrich was speaker. In January 1995, when he became speaker, the gross national debt was $4.8 trillion. When he left four years later, it was $5.6 trillion, an increase of $800 billion.
To be sure, Gingrich did not single-handedly deepen America's debt, just as he didn't balance any budgets on his own. He was a driving force, along with Democratic President Bill Clinton and figures in both houses of Congress, in the economic setbacks and advancements of that time.
___
ROMNEY: "I spent my life, my career, in the private sector."
THE FACTS: This is true ? except for four years as Massachusetts governor, recent years running for president in the 2008 and 2012 elections, a few years running the Olympics and the time he put into his failed run for a Senate seat in 1994.
In essence, Romney has devoted himself to political endeavors since his successful run for governor in 2002, and has been pursuing the presidency for five years.
A month after his term as governor ended in 2007, he announced his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. After John McCain defeated him for the nomination, Romney devoted himself to building a political network, helping Republican candidates raise money, and writing a book that set the stage for his second run for president.
Indeed, Romney, who made his fortune as founder of the investment firm Bain Capital, has not held a private-sector job with a regular paycheck for more than a decade.

MICHELE BACHMANN: "We have an IAEA report that just recently came out that said literally Iran is within just months of being able to obtain that (a nuclear) weapon."
RON PAUL: "There is no U.N. report that said that. It's totally wrong, what you just said."
Bachmann: "It's the IAEA report."
THE FACTS: As Paul said, the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency does not state that Iran is within months of having nuclear arms. The U.N. agency report does suggest that Iran conducted secret experiments whose sole purpose is the development of nuclear weapons but did not put a time frame on when Iran might succeed in building a bomb, and it made no final conclusion on Tehran's intent.
Bachmann also erred by arguing that Iran has "stated they will use it (a nuclear weapon) against the United States."
Iran vehemently rejects that it is developing a nuclear bomb, let alone that it plans to drop one on the U.S.
___
ROMNEY: "I'm firmly in support of people not being discriminated against based upon their sexual orientation. At the same time, I oppose same-sex marriage. That's been my position from the beginning."
THE FACTS: In large measure, Romney has been consistent in those two positions, despite accusations of flip-flopping on gay rights.
He walked a fine line back in his failed 1994 Senate campaign, vowing to fight for equality but stopping short of endorsing gay marriage. That's the same line he walked Thursday night.
He has changed, though, on whether gay marriage should be addressed at the state or federal level. He has favored a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage at least since the beginning of his 2008 presidential bid, when he was the only major Republican candidate to do so. In 1994, he had said the matter should be decided by individual states. That was before the idea of a constitutional ban had gained traction in politics.
___
BACHMANN: "After the debates that we had last week, PolitiFact came out and said that everything I said was true."
THE FACTS: False.
For the second debate in a row, Gingrich complained that Bachmann wasn't getting her facts straight, this time when she went after him for the big money he made from Freddie Mac. In her own defense, Bachmann cited ratings from PolitiFact, a fact-checking organization that ranks statements on a scale from true to false, with the worst offender being "Pants on Fire" false.
PolitiFact rated two Bachmann statements from last week's debate. One, claiming Gingrich once believed in an individual health care mandate, was ranked mostly true. The other, that Romney introduced "socialized medicine" in his state, was judged "Pants on Fire" false.
Indeed, Bachmann has the worst record of accuracy in the Republican field, as rated by that organization and traced by others. Fully 73 percent of her statements checked by PolitiFact were judged mostly false or worse. Gingrich was wrong the next most often, 59 percent of the time.

Author and atheist Christopher Hitchens, 62, died Dec. 15 from esophageal cancer. Hitchens was famously atheistic, even in the face of his own mortality. His final piece was written even as he succumbed to pain and the cancer took all of his strength.
The New York Times reports Hitchens' cause of death was complications from esophageal cancer. Here's a look at the disease from a statistical standpoint.
What is esophageal cancer?
The esophagus is the organ that delivers food from the throat to the stomach. The National Cancer Institute states esophageal cancer forms in the lining of the esophagus. There are two types of esophageal cancer--one that forms in the flat cells that line the organ and the type that forms in specialized cells that naturally secrete mucus in the throat.
Who gets esophageal cancer?
The American Cancer Society states cancer of the esophagus can occur anywhere along the lining of the organ. Although rare, more and more people are getting this type of cancer in the United States.
Around 17,000 new cases of esophageal cancer were diagnosed in 2011. Around 14,700 people will die of the disease in 2011. The most common risk factors for esophageal cancer are smoking and frequent alcohol use.
A new factor being observed in America is obesity. Acid reflux disease can also lead to esophageal cancer. Diets low in fruits and vegetables can also be a risk factor.
Men have a three times greater risk for getting esophageal cancer than women. The reason is that men use alcohol and tobacco more than women. Age is also a factor. People older than 55 are responsible for 85 percent of esophageal cancer cases.
Five-year survival rates for esophageal cancer are 37 percent if the cancer is localized. The rate drops to 17 percent for all stages of the cancer.
Which famous people have had the disease?
MSNBC reported Ron Silver died of esophageal cancer in March of 2009. Silver was a regular on the television show "The West Wing" and was 62 at the time of his death. Japanese actor Mako, an Academy Award nominee in 1966, also passed away from complications of esophageal cancer. He was 72 when he died.
The Oral Cancer Foundation states one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood died from esophageal cancer. Humphrey Bogart succumbed to the disease at age 58. The underlying cause of his cancer was smoking cigarettes.
The New York Times reported Robert Kardashian, Sr. died of esophageal in 2003. He was O.J. Simpson's lawyer shortly after Simpson's ex-wife's murder. He was also the biological father of famous reality television stars Kim, Khloe and Kourtnery Kardashian.

From Muppets to magic, MTV counts down the top films of the year.

In 2011, Daniel Radcliffe brought the "Harry Potter" franchise to a firecracker of an ending after a decade bewitching the multiplex. Ryan Gosling played kissy-face with Carey Mulligan in an elevator, then turned around and smashed a dude's skull in. Kristen Wiig made us laugh, Martin Scorsese made us gasp, and Kermit the Frog made us want to sing along.
Memorable moments, all. But what makes a great film — what makes it one of the best of the year — is not just a buzzworthy few seconds here and there, but a moviegoing experience packed with them.
How, then, do we pick the Best Movies of 2011? How do we weigh Joe Cornish's genre-busting directorial debut against Matthew Vaughn's rescue job of our favorite comic book mutants? Do we favor George Clooney's ability to elicit laughs in the most tragic of circumstances, or do we bow down to the staggeringly raw performance by Rooney Mara?
Those are questions no one person could answer. So we gathered a roundtable of the savviest minds at MTV to discuss, debate, argue and occasionally curse about everything that went down at the multiplex this year: Eric Ditzian, Josh Horowitz and Amy Wilkinson of MTV Movies and Kevin Polowy and Brooke Tarnoff of NextMovie. In the end, we came up with our 10 picks:
10. "Attack the Block"
In a year filled with alien-invasion movies from the likes of Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams, it says a lot that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish's little indie that could, "Attack the Block," was the best of the bunch. Taking science fiction for a ride through the gang-ridden streets of South London results in a wildly inventive and hilarious twist on the genre, complete with what has to be the absolute best creature design seen in any movie all year. Believe, bruvs: This suspenseful, action-packed and endlessly charming movie was the sci-fi flick of 2011. Allow it. — Josh Wigler
9. "The Descendants"
"The Descendants" meant a change of pace for its star George Clooney. His character, Matt King, couldn't use Clooney's trademark charm to fix his broken family after a boating accident takes away his wife and the mother of his two teenage daughters. The Clooney we saw was not the suave movie star, but a confused schlub, figuring things out as he goes. The result is a complex and emotionally honest film that would be sad if it weren't so hilarious. — Kevin Sullivan
8. "50/50"
Harrowing, heartbreaking and at times hilarious, "50/50" is perhaps the most honest onscreen portrayal of cancer ever. And it's one you'll actually want to watch. The film follows 27-year-old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he's diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, battling the disease with the help of friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and therapist-in-training Katherine (Anna Kendrick). Based on the real-life experience of Rogen's friend Will Reiser (who penned the screenplay), "50/50" doesn't apologize for finding the funny in a bad situation. And that's why we like it. — Amy Wilkinson
7. "The Muppets"
It's "The Muppets" for the new millennium: Kermit and friends return to theaters after a painful 12-year absence, updated for a new generation by writer/co-star/"it" schlump Jason Segel and songs from "Flight of the Conchords" star Bret McKenzie. If the story starts off a little depressing — the Muppets have gone their separate ways and their studio is falling apart — that's nothing a little choreographed dancing, Amy Adams and a chicken chorus can't fix. — Brooke Tarnoff
6. "X-Men: First Class"
Matthew Vaughn's prequel had a lot of things working against it, namely Bryan Singer's two "X-Men" films and the talented actors in those films who are already associated with the classic Marvel mutants. Vaughn smartly found a way to use that to his advantage, giving fans nods to Singer's films through well-placed cameos while laying the foundation for an entirely new franchise based on the characters' backstories, anchored by the very talented and bromantic James McAvoy as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto." — Kara Warner
5. "Hugo"
With so many different ways to see a movie, the magic of going to a theater and sitting in the dark seems like an outdated idea. Martin Scorsese attempted to recapture the feeling that made the movies such a special thing in the first place with "Hugo." Through the story of an orphan boy living in a Paris train station, "Hugo" dives into the creation of movies and reminds us all of why the movies are a place to see dreams come true. — K.S.
4. "Bridesmaids"
"Bridesmaids" is one of those rare comedic gems in which everything worked: The crazy talented cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy in a killer breakout performance; the one-liners, many of which were ad-libbed; that unpleasant-but-hilarious scene at the bridal store; Jon Hamm playing a d-bag — it was all so good and so funny. And not just funny for women, funny for everyone, to the tune of a $169 million box-office gross. — K.W.
3. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
All good things must come to an end. When it came time for the "Harry Potter" series to fulfill that old adage with this summer's "Deathly Hallows, Part 2," it wasn't just a good thing. It was — if you'll forgive our sappiness — a magical thing. Watching Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint grow into their heroic owns over the past decade has been a thrilling ride filled with tragedy and hope, despair and triumph, death and life. It wasn't just the best "Potter" movie of all time; it was one of the best movies of the year. — J.W.
2. "Drive"
In a movie year that could easily have been renamed the Year of Gosling, the flasher of abs, breaker-up of street fights and all around great Canadian guy's finest performance was as a nameless driver (regardless of what the Hollywood Foreign Press might have you believe). You either wanted to be him or be with him. No matter what, you couldn't take your eyes of him. While the box-office bow of "Drive" lacked punch (to date, it has grossed $34.7 million), the film's cultural impact has been huge, inspiring some first-rate spoofs and unleashing a soundtrack that became required listening for anyone with an iPod and half a soul. There was no cooler movie in 2011, and there is probably no other movie on this list we'll still be talking about in 2021. — Eric Ditzian
1. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Devotees of Stieg Larsson's wildly popular books (or the Swedish-language movie versions) need not fret: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is in good hands with master filmmaker David Fincher. The director follows up the excellent "Social Network" with another tour de force, injecting the murder mystery that introduces us to outcast hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) and embattled journalist (Daniel Craig) with style, intensity and relentless suspense. Mara is a revelation, and the film's daunting 160-minute runtime breezes by thanks to one heart-racing scene after the next. Dark and tough to watch at times, but a triumph all around. — Kevin Polowy
